Does anyone know if GM put build sheets in 66-67s? There isn't a whole lot of documents with the car that I just purchased and I'd like to try in research the history of it.
Mine was in the upright rear seat springs. Just pull it out. I believe some had them on top of the fuel tank, and some cars didn't get them or got the wrong one. There were no standard place to put them. I also had build tags under my bucket seats, just to add more to the car story.
I'd say that the most common place to find build sheets in Novas is behind the upright part of the back seat. You have to remember what build sheets were used for... to let the factory workers double-check what parts went into the cars as they moved down the line.
You also will sometimes find 'partial' build sheets - usually referencing interior trim - in the springs of the bucket seats.
Full-frame cars often had them on top of the gas tank because the tanks were added to the frame 'early' in the assembly process. Therefore, the top of the tank was a very 'visible' place. That didn't happen in unibody cars, so you rarely see Novas or Camaros with build sheets on top of the gas tank. The build sheets could have been taped in many other places in Novas, but those in 'exposed' places would probably have been removed either by the workers getting the cars ready to ship or - if they survived that process, they would have been caught by the dealership employee assigned to get the cars ready to sell.
i found some under the bench seat towards the passenger side ....
but locations may vary because it was placed ( if any sometimes they didnt even put them in the cars ) at where worked he wanted but general locatios, are under or behind the rear seat, above the tank, under the bench or even under the carpet ( from what i have read )

Is there someone who can help with research?
Thanks

There was no requirement to put build sheets in cars and no specific place for them when they did. Some got them, many didn't. As mentioned, some build sheets didn't even match the car they were found in.
Researching the history of a U.S. built Chevy II can be difficult. As Pierre's post indicates, you can decode the VIN and cowl tag info at Novaresource.org. GM Canada can provide a complete documentation package for cars built and/or sold new in Canada. Unfortunately, no such service is available for U.S. built cars.
I hired a private investigator to do title search for me, had to because of privatcy act. He got me names of all the owner back to 1970. Then I started looking up names (internat searching) in the location from the title I know crap shut but I did locate the owner 1970 of my 66 and he gave me some good info. I also talked to 3 or4 owners in the 70's, it was really neat to here there stories of the old car. The owner from 1970 was suppose to send me pics of car but couldn't locate any that he thought he had. PI only charge 50.00 but that was 15yrs ago. Contact one and see.
