What GM rear end looks like a Ford 9"? I saw one on a beat up, all stock 62 convertible. Looked a lot like a Ford 9". Solid on the back, with 10 bolts around the removable center section facing the driveshaft.
I didn't see this on the nova resource site. Anyone know what it is?
The 62, 63, and early 64 Chevy II's had an 8.2 drop-out pumpkin style rearend.
There have been a few discussions around here in the past on them and it sounds like they aren't the best for performance use. If you search for the word "pumpkin" you'll get a few hits.
The 62-63 models came with a diff that had a solid rear cover, and the case bolted on to the front...similar to a 9". GM used them in a bunch of models from 54-63 (I think?) Not as strong or desirable as the 9" unfortunately.
mine had one in it it was 5-lug 4:11 geared posi unit Now have narrowed 9" 35 spline axels ford explorer brakes with parking brake, brake disc re drilled to chevy bolt pattern no high dollar stuff and can get brake parts from any parts stores see pics in my photobucket
They were weak at best and I have enough experience replacing them. I opted for the use of an Olds rearend in my 55 Belair and put an end to the destruction.
Back in the early '80s I bought a rusty '65 4-door with a six cylinder.
I parted it out and after taking everything I wanted, was going to scrap the rest when a guy I knew came by and asked me if he could have the rear out of it. I said "sure, if you take the whole car away".
He claimed those rears were significantly-stronger than a conventional 10-bolt and he put it under a drag car.
I never did find out how it held-up or how long it lasted but they look like they would be stronger. Back in the early 60s, everyone wanted the 55-57 Chevy and the Olds rears for the same reason - they had the removable 3rd member and were supposedly stronger.
The real American Graffiti coupe has a '57 Chevy rear underneath.
