how hard would it be to convert my 74 automatic nova to a 4 speed??
just wondering.
i love driving stick shift and would love to have my nova this way.
it is fun, but work,
first finding all the parts.
pedals
bell housing
flywheel, and bolts
z-bar and linkage
clutch fork
clutch assy.
4 speed starter
shifter and linkage
not to mention the 4 speed itself. which kind?
clutch rod boot for the firewall
backup light switch and neutral safety switch set up.
probably forgot a few things.
take your time and collect everything.
people here can set you in the right direction.
and when the time comes, you could probably get some help installing too.
holy moley! haha, i guess when i get finished with the restore and i get bored i will put a 4 speed in it. right now i just cant wait to drive the thing!! she's drivable now but i had a small title issue and the previous owner is sending me new title asap.
There's actually a set of pedals in our classified now for sale, and the majority if not everything is available from the aftermarket. Taking your time collecting parts will save you money. I would recommend a 5 speed if your serious about going stick, you'll get more enjoyment all around with the right gear and a 5 speed setup, but they're not cheap. A conventional 4 speed M21 setup would be around $2000 for everything including the M21 4 speed, give or take, a 5 speed would need another $1200-1500. This is for a new 5 speed though.
Flywheel $100 used
Clutch Assembly $300 new
Tranny (4 spd) and bellhousing ****700-1000 used
Zbar and brackets $100 new
Pedals $125 used
Shifter and linkage kit $250 new
Crossmember $100 used
Pilot bushing $15 new
This is Canadian base pricing though, you may find new parts cheaper in the US.
I also would suggest a 5 or 6 speed. I went with the 4 speed conversion and am now going for the tremac 5 speed. Only one regret is I left it in gear without a neutral safety switch and my 10 year old started it in gear. It is currently in the body shop.
