Just read the Car Craft article on 200R4. I always thought these were a lesser trans because everybody always used the 700R4. What years and vehicles did this trans (200R4) come in. And does anyone have an opinion on why to use the 700 instead of the 200. My engine is stock and my next engine will be under 400HP. Chime in folks.:D

I have the 200-4R in a 350 sb powered 49 chevy. It came out of a 85 Buick LeSabre.

I am having trouble getting the tv cable adjusted, as indicated above. I did not have this problem with my only experience with a 700R4.

The 200 is an easy installation with its multi bolt pattern and comparable size to the 350.

200R4 was used in mid size cars, including Buick Grand Nationals and T-Types which where both Turbo V6's.
700R4 was used in large cars and trucks.

Either can be built to suit your application.
200R4 has a higher first gear, it is lighter, takes less power to turn and is easier to install if you have a TH350 or Powerglide, same drive shaft as TH350 & Powerglide. It also had a slightly lower overdrive ratio so it will get slightly better MPG.
700R4 has a lower first gear so you will get more torque at the wheels in 1st.
It uses the same drive shaft yoke as a TH400.

Here are a couple of links for you to look at:

Nope,

the 400 and 700 dont share the same slip yoke. the 400 is larger
the 700 and 350 are the same

A long shaft th350 and 700r4 are the same length and the only mod is the crossmember,

a short shaft th350car can have a 700r4 installed, but the driveshaft will have to be shortend

The th200-4r also came in the B-bodies of the mid 80s.think olds royal BRO-HAM 88 caddy fleetwood, pontiac parrisienne and the buick roadmaster. These can be gotten for cheaper cores prices than one from a g-body.the valvebody programing is just a tad softer however. Now there are many companies that offer the geometry correcting tv cable brackets that were not available just a few years ago.

I am using the 200R4. I like the tighter gear spacing. Drops fewer revs on gear change. Some like the nice low gear in the 700s but it does have a big drop to second gear. If using the 200R4, you'll probably want 3.73s in the rear while the 700 would probably like 3.55s just fine. Since you probably have to get a new crossmember and TV setup anyway, probably doesn't matter a whole lot. 700 will require DS shortening while a new yoke on the stock TH350 Ds should cover you on the 200R4. Either stock trans will probably need upgrades to survide a hot V8. Most low to middle builds of either trans are advertised to support 400-450 HP.

I'd go with a 200-4R out of a Turbo Regal, if you can find one. It will be more than enough in stock form to handle a mild smallblock. My 200 in the GN is original with 100K+ on it, and still going strong. Shifts great every time. It will be going in a 3rd Gen Nova here soon, hopefully.

Just my opinion.

2004r Help Please.

Hey Now to all. A little checking into the constant pressure valve body shows that it does prevent the clutchs from overheating and burning up if the TV cable is not adjusted correctly. Also indicates that the TV cable is still hooked up and used for shift points to shift on time and keep the line pressures correct. Respectfully, "Bill's" II PS. This appears to be a TCI valve body and also used in the 7004R. I don't know who else has this option.
