Any California smog experts

I need to get my '72 back into the DMV system. I suspect that I will need a brake and lamp inspection from the CHP and the VIN verification from the DMV. My questions are on the DMV inspection will they be looking for the original smog equipment to be in place for that year even though it is exempt from biennial smog testing? Will they be looking for performance parts that are not C.A.R.B. complaint in CA?

Anything older than 1975 they will not look for anything smog related the DMV person behind the counter that will go look at your Vin number most likely does not have the skills to even tell you what type of motor is in the car
They look at the Vin number make sure it's not been tampered with and then you'll need to get your brake and lamp inspection and you should be good to go

Thank you for the answers. I need to replace the front portion of my dash. I guess I will carve around the VIN before I tack in the new piece so it retains it's original mounting.

I could do your VIN verification (well any LEO can but some agencies don't), I'm not even 100% sure you have to do the lamp inspection (unless DMV has already flagged you for that).
