Burnout and manual transmission

I know this is gonna sound stupid, but I've never driven anything with enough power to actually light the wheels up and Have a question.

I have seen videos and have been at the drag strip and have seen automatic cars do a burnout. They break loose and spin the tires, and you can hear it shift through all the gears until eventually the driver lets go of the brakes and rolls out of it. But with a manual transmission can you shift quick enough to not stop the burnout between gears? When the tires get hot traction goes up and I would think if you let off to shift the car would buck forward when ya let the clutch back out. Or do you just keep it in first and watch the rpm?

You dont shift. When I run my 95 Trans am 6 speed at the strip, I do the burnout in 2nd gear. There for you dont need to shift and just watch the RPM's so you dont over rev it.

If you can shift fast enough you can do it. Most cars cant get past 3rd gear unless they start in water.

Heres a video for you.

I dont like starting in the water, makes for a nice drippy mess when you are at the lights all staged up. I will roll throught the water slowly and then do my burnout after the water trap.

Looks like he's running a line lock. If you're fast you can grab the brake after you rev it up and dump the clutch. This is if you're trying to get a really big burnout. Just trying to impress friends and piss off neighbors.... put it in second or third (depending on the power you make, i can start ours in third for a big smoker) rev it up, dump the clutch and go.

the neighbors and their little kids frown on that in the suburbs.

I did contribute to the re-blacktopping of my friends driveway though... about 10 times. A few in the nova, a few in the vette, a lot in my truck (it was almost down to the cords, i gave one hell of a send off to those old tires)

Rev the engine up in second gear, and then dump the clutch. Leave the car in gear, and carry the burnout from the water box. It will work better with a line lock. Don't try shifting unless you are running a clutchless trans. I start the burnout running a clutchless trans in second gear, quickly shift 3rd, and 4th, release the line lock, and carry the burnout forward. The tires fry up nicely this way in about 3 seconds. At 7000 rpms, it works out to 130 mph tire speed. If you watch Pro Stocks do a burnout, they start in 3rd gear, and hit 4th, and 5th gear real fast.
