Intake gasket question for Small Block Chevy's

why is it that intake gaskets for small block chevy's have open rear coolant holes on both gaskets even though there is no port opening holes in the intake manifold? like why dont they make the intake gasket with the rear coolant passages blocked off? does anyone know why?

So you can use the same gasket on either side.

You also have to remember that some intake allow you to use the rear coolant passages.

This one has the bungs that just need to be drilled and tapped.

Typically.....Yes. Otherwise you'll have NO coolant flow. Kinda like a stuck thermostat.

Some of the TBI engines used the pass rear corner for the heater feed.

The direct answer to the question!

So the head & gasket can be used on eather side of the engine.

If the design was front water port only the heads & gasket would be LH / RH only.

Nope. As long as they line up with the ports and bolt holes (TBI, vortec style or early style) you'll be fine.
