I need to change the speedometer cable on my '71 Nova.
Can the cable end at the back of the speedometer be accessed without taking the dash apart and insturment/gauge panel out...? Does it screw on or is there a clip for it....?
Also....found something interesting about the big block 3rd gen cars:
....Most people do not realize that on performance manual transmission cars, the speedometer cable was routed higher up on the firewall by the distributor, and ran down the firewall, usually held by three clips, away from the clutch Z-bar. ....1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 Nova 4-speed models....
Sure, just go upside down, reach up, stick your tongue out to the left, use a few cuss words, push down on the clip and pull out the cable. Install in reverse order. Chiropractic consultation may be required depending on your age.:devil:
I would suggest you pull the old one first and then go to the parts store and compare lengths, I had to exchange mine because the first one was 8" too long.
yeah its easy if your young. also included in the name technician is contortionist - its not much fun.
One question about length is how long is a muncie speedo cable? mine was cut clean off at the firewall+4" mine is an original 4 speed muncie car 1969
thanks for any info.
Don't know about originality, but the cable I am needing to replace was connected to a Muncie M-21 before I replaced the M-21 transmission with a 700R4 last month. It fit the 4-speed just fine as well as the 700R4. I can measure it when removed, but you likely will have replies by others before that gets done.
It is not really that hard if you don't have a radio installed. I changed mine out last week but I have the fancy radio delete. I doubt I could have got my hand up there if the radio was installed.
Your Quote is correct about BB cars, both my cars are this way.
