Any one have an idea of why the steering wheel / steering shaft moves up, down, and side to side when I push up or side ways on the wheel? I had the car painted back during the winter and the column was taken apart and painted with the rest of the interior. I put on a new Grant wheel and when I got the car back it was tight. After I drove it a few miles ( 40 - 60 ) I noticed the movement start showing up. I removed the wheel and all of the hardware was tight. Is there something deeper in the column that may have loosened up I have not seen like maybe behind the turn signal switch? I am just a little leary of driving it much until I can get it tightened back up. I am open for suggestions. You can also see the steering shaft move around in the nuckle under the hood against the fire wall.

Check the lower bushing in the column, right where the shaft exits, it might be broken/fallen out/ not there......

I had the same problem. Get a exploded picture of the steering wheel and coloum. I was missing a spring that went under the steering wheel. A member on this site had an extra and sent it to me . Problem solved.

T,
Thanks, I will check to see. You are talking about inside the car right before the shaft goes through the fire wall or do you mean where the shaft comes out of the column?

What type wheel were you using, the original or an aftermarket? Did you find an exploded picture on the net somewhere?

The spring if I remember right is just under the steering wheel adapter. But check the pic, when you find it.

At the firewall, where the shaft sticks out of the column, in the engine bay, there's a bushing there.
