Is it even worth it to scrounge wrecking yards for a good gm HEI unit to use or buy a new one only? If so what years have the Hei im looking for? I saw a chart on here once so i did a search but couldnt find it. I think the chart had mostly to do with what can was on what model and year car.

If you do buy that one get this kit... start with a medium and light spring. Turn the vacuum advance adjustment the whole way in with an allen wrench and hook it up to full manifold vacuum. The can that comes with that dizzy is ridiculous in the amount it pulls in and how soon. Throw the instructions for it away they'll do you no good. They don't jive with what happens, the adjustment seems to control more of when the advance starts coming in not how much as they say. A couple turns out might be OK for a motor with stock heads but if you have good fast burning heads just screw it the whole way in.

I have one you can have
The only catch is he has to bring the Nova to the next meet
I can bring it to the Hat if you guys are going to be there
This is just a stock GM big cap HEI.
I have seen that a lot of times you need to massage the firewall to make them fit.

I just bought the Summit one for $89.00.
I have that one in my car as well.
But to answer the original question, my Dad bought an HEI from the local Pick-n-Pull, and installed it in his 56 Chevy, and it worked good, and still works good.
