View Full Version : Risky installing 1.94" valves on these heads?

I may be able to get a (very)good deal on some #601 heads from a 305. I do not intend to use these on the 350 in my current Nova.

If these heads had 1.72" valves, would it be potentially harmful or structurally unsound to machine and install 1.94" valves? Is it less risky if they were 1.84" heads? Is there anything to watch out for, seeing that these may be 1.72" as opposed to 1.84"?:) Thank you for the help.:)

would they actually flow more? The valve will be closer to the side of the combustion chamber closing that distance....it could flow less??
Judging a head by its valve size is the total wrong way to go about it. Also if your intake runners are so small it would be pointless to put bigger valves in. 305 heads do not flow very well (heads, not valves).

I have put a bunch of 1.94 and even some 2.02s in a lot of 601s as well as other 305 based heads.

While the ports are not great they are not bad for a "stock" head. It does increase flow quite a bit.

As far as shrouding goes I just use a carbide cutter to open the side of the chamber to what ever diameter I choose.

I may be wrong but I think the vast majority of 601s that I have seen were 1.84s.

thank you:)

This is helpful information. The good deal, however, is not going to happen...:bored: I asked the man what size valves they had. He said: "i am nnot shure of size but they are the bigger of the two sizes" I asked if he knew if they were cracked, he said "woa i think you need a summitracing book cuz ur gettin to complacated there as is"

But I will use this information for the set of 601s I actually use. Thanks again:)

I have 194's on my 601's on my 307, but in my opinion you will do yourself more good working on the exhaust ports and matching the headers. A 307 will only pump so much air and the outflow gains me bigger help than the intake.

ahem, ahem.... who said anything 'bout 307s? ahem, ahem....:D

how much would it cost for valves, machine work, assembly? In a performance application these heads flow like crap. Take the money and buy a set of decent heads already done. They might work good on a 307, but the bigger displacement demands more air, you can get a set of vortecs for the price you'll have into these.

Mine are going on a 350 when I decide the time has come. Then we'll have to talk about some porting and 202's. :D
