I was wondering how much you all hate cherry bombs on Nova's. Just wanting a different sound for the Nova.

When I was looking for some cherry bombs to replace the holey turbos on my Nova, I couldn't find any. I ended up having to use another set of turbos.

some people like Turbos exclusively,
While I myself say there is naught nor ought there be
Nothing so exalted on the face of the earth
As that prince of mufflers . . . The Cherry Bomb!
Tommy :) Does that sound like an old song to anyone else or is it just me......

They don't flow worth a damn, and sound like crap, but it's your car.
Here's a chart I found:http://broaderperformance.com/muffler_flow_tests.htm

Hmmm...not long ago I saw that Thrush is making new mufflers. I haven't heard them or know anybody running them maybe they're worth checking out?

Cherry bombs suck. Everyone makes a big deal over these things that sound like total *** and cause you to lose tenths at the track. The same goes for glasspacks:rolleyes:

the muffler man is seated at the table in the laboratory of the utility muffler research kitchen...reaching for an under sized chrome broom he gathers an intimate quantity of rusted muffler remnantsand brushing his scapular aside procedes to dump inside his shirt he turns to speak "some people like cherry bombs better,i for one care less for them!" yep sounds like a song to me.......Frank Zappa R.I.P

My brother tried to order them from Jeg's today and they're on 2 week backorder, so he went with Dynomax Ultra Flo mufflers (basically the same thing).

Ahh, the 80s. An era rampant in cherry bomb mufflers and hair rock.
At least the sound of the music was occasionally good.

I remember the Cherry Bombs well. It was actually the 70's. They were great in the 70's when I didn't have any money. In the 21st century, I wouldn't buy them any more unless my only other choice was Flowmaster 40's. Anything is better than Flowmaster 40's.

I hate them! They're redneck mufflers IMO.
Glasspacks are too loud and "poppy" for my taste.

Anyone ever heard of / have Spin Tech Mufflers on the Nova's? I know in the Impala SS world they use them and they sounded awesome on the LT1's.

Caused by exhaust too small, not really by the muffler. Any muffler too small will rap off and sound like sh*t.

Thats funny... all the cowboy pickups here in the 70's ran glasspacks... and were stock... after the glass was gone.... ratatat and crackling.... all then rednecks thought is was the coolest thing. rummmbubba bubba bubba...
Glass packs get that cracklin sound more so with all the glass is gone, then all the pack is, is a expansion chamber.

yeah right now im running flowmaster 2 chamber 40 series right now and its I'm just getting used to it. As for the Spintechs, my friend has some on his 88 Mustang GT and it sounds AMAZING!! They are just sort of expensive and I want a cheap fix.

Remember that bigger is not always better. You still need some backpressure in the exhaust for a street car, otherwise you'll lose some grunt.
I had glasspacks on my '71 when it had a 307 and it actually sounded decent. Of course, there were the hillbillies who took a screwdriver to the cherry bombs in their ford trucks, which I absolutely hated. But as bad as V8s sound with 'em, think about all the the ricers out there that annoy the s#!t out of you!

Can you explain how back pressure makes an engine produce more "grunt"?

I cannot stand the cheap sound my self. My dad rocks the cherry bombs though.....guess it works for him. I keep telling him that his car will sound much better with some better mufflers. Oh well, it's his car. It's not for me though;)

My dad has a cherry bomb on his nova and it sounds bad to me, kinda like an old farm truck. The inside is much smaller diameter than the pipe that enters and exits it. I on the other hand have a Thrush brand glasspack that is the same diameter the whole way through, with just a bunch of holes along the inside. This muffler sounds a lot better to me and also seems like it would flow a lot better.
In my opinion, not all glasspacks are created equal.

Had them on an 87 chevy pickup with a 350. Sounded like poop. Literally. It was like a runny dump. I went to autozone and got the $15 specials and clamped them on. Sounded so much better. Stick with some decent mufflers. I think you will be a whole lot happier.

haha well after everyones devout hatred for cherry bombs im not going to buy them. I also have seen some people on here who hate flowmasters but yeah. For right now I'm going to stick with the flowmasters, there isnt anything wrong with them, they have a good tone and if it aint broken then i reckon i aint gonna fix it. I'm going to ever change out the mufflers, then i'll go with spintech mufflers, they sound amazing!

everybody hates the original red tube glasspack cherry bombs, but what do people think of the new regular mufflers made by cherry bomb?
like the elite and the extreme series that are similar to other box style mufflers, how do they compare?

Ditto!!!
Thurst had some pieces of crap that weren't much better.
You don't have to be loud to have a fast car. Personally, I would rather be stealthy than loud. :D
A few years back I ran a set of straight through type mufflers on the Nova for a few weeks before I got tired of not being able to here myself think. The only fun part was driving through a parking lot and setting off car alarms with your exhaust. While idling through a lot when ever I would here someones car alarm chirp I would goose the gas a bit to send their alarm whaling.

i dont know if i have ever heard glass packs
If you ever hear a hotrod that sounds different yet really cool.... It probably has glasspacks on it  Nothing smooth about them, quite the opposite of a Rustang GT or car set up to sound like a Rustang GT.... :D :D
I had a set on my 65 C10 and the pipes exited at each side in front of the rear tires. It sounded great, I enjoyed the sound ricocheting off a wall or barrier... Pure harmony to my ears...

I'm with Tommy on this one... I have the old school "blue" glasspacks on my 67 chevelle BBC and love them. My Dad called them "pacemakers?" when we bought them.

Has anyone ever used the Smitty's muffler? Someone told me they are packed with steel and not ceramic glass of the Cherry Bomb red. Any comments? In the early days of hot rodding they were very popular. However, the pipe size in and out is only 2". I do not think I have ever heard a car with them.
