I just put a spectre 1" carb spacer between my edelbrock performer mani and carb. When I fired her up the idle was definitely higher. I put my foot down a little and was flying. Maybe I'm just trippin out, but it feels a lot faster.
I'm pretty sure I have to really dial in my timing and get it perfect, and maybe adjust my idle.

Will I lose any benifits if I slow my idle?

Anyone else tried this. Results?

I asked this same question a while ago... here are the messages i recieved...

Don't play with the 4 hole pattern. If you want a power increase, run a 1" spacer between your carb and intake. If that doesn't work (usually does), then it is easily reversable.

Really not much difference in power. Again what plays the role /part here is if it,Is a open plate or a 4 hole plate. Ok here is a example
Lets say the spacer is 4inchs thick. A open plate the carb will think it
is sitting on the roof. a 4 hole plate the carb will still think it is sitting on a 1inch plate. Another words the 4 hole plate gives better low end,
and the open is for Top end. The carb plate is really a tuning aid. It
pretty much tricks the carb one way or another. Because of the vacum signal the carb gets, The 4 hole plate keeps the vacum signal
higher then a open plate.

Ok maybe this mit be a better example. you take my tunnle ram intake
It has a crap load of plenum /runner volume to help keep the signal
strong to the carbs I have 4 hole plates under the carbs. That in turn
makes the carbs think there sitting lowwer.
i hope this helps.

The mind plays some serious games doesn't it? Sometimes spacers make a little more power but I seriously doubt you are going to feel it. Often it actually decreases power, it's dependent upon many different variables in your engine combination...the only way to really tell is on a dyno or drag strip.

Now step up to a 2" plate if it will fit under your hood. my big block seemed to gain a lot of power in the mid RPM range when i added the 2". But my problem was that my air cleaner was hitting the top of my hood and choking the motor a little. i put the spacer on and a cowl hood and it feels a lot smoother/stronger now.

Most of the gains I have seen are from engines that have a lot of low end and not to much top end than the y gain a lot from a 2 inch spacer. If you already have good topend than it will not do much for you.

Absolutely!! Variables such as cam profile, vacuum signal strength, runner approach angle, engine rpm range, carb size, etc.. all come into play. That's why there's no real absolute answer.

Are you sure when you installed the spacer you didn't strain the throttle cable? This would explain the faster idle and make it seem like it's "want's to run"

I have a 4 hole 1/2" spacer I put on. It gave me a crisper throttle response, but I had no change in ET at the track.

x2. i had that problem when i installed my 2" spacer. now i use a solid linkage w/ an adjustable bar for the length.
