We'll just refer to all these as the before pictures. It really isn't as bad as I thought it was going to look. It will look a lot nicer going back in.

Now I'll need to see how motivated I'll be tomorrow and Monday to get it ready to paint. First, wash it down with brake cleaner. Then start the process using the POR15 kit I got (cleaner, metal sealer, primer then engine paint.)

Are you going to do a rebuild or just paint her and drop her back in? Gotta love those 6 Bangers! Billy.

I've already drawn about 10 lines in the sand and stepped across all of them. I need to set a limit somewhere. I was going to paint the motor in the car but decided to pull it instead. Then I said I wasn't going to do anything to the engine bay but after seeing it yesterday, there may be a 12th line. :o

You might want to buy some carb cleaner.I have cleaned a few engines. The last one was a motor out of mud truck. It was filthy....
Anyway I always buy engine degreaser, carb cleaner, and brake clean.
I use the brake cleaner and degreaser first.Using paper towels and air nozzle. Then when most the bigger stuff is off I use the carb cleaner. And man it works awesome. When you think you go it clean spray some carb cleaner on there and there will be more dirt coming down the motor.
I also take some card board and put it under the engine stand.Make sure no one smokes and wear some safety glasses.
Also I have found that regular old dollar roll paper towels is better than buying shop towels.I am sure shoptowels work better for other's though.

I have a kit from POR 15 that has Marine Clean, Metal Ready, POR 15 and then Engine Enamel.
It's going to take me some time to get this all done. I'm not real happy about having to hose it down after the first two steps and then the POR 15 adn the Enamel have to be put on within about 8-10 hours of each other.

I just did the underside and engine compartment with por-15. I don't think you would have to hose it off, maybe just a spray bottle with some water in it to limit the mess. I would recommend scraping off everything you can before the degreaser and maybe a little wire brushing to break off some of the crud.

I took some brake cleaner, a few rags and a scraper to it today to get some of the real thick stuff off (there was 40 years worth of crud on it.) The bracket that the alternator attaches to was caked with about 1/4" of it.
I have some spray bottles that I was planning on using. I'm just worried about getting water somewhere it shouldn't be. I also want to make sure I do it right so it won't peel off in the future.
I plan on doing step 1 tomorrow.

Finished the painting process today. I'm not real happy with the first coat of Orange, so I may do another. I'll see in the morning after it is dry, how it looks. Here's a bunch of updated pictures...
This is how it looked last September when I bought her:
