Since that time we have learned about wind resistance/wind drag. It has been proven that a car sitting lower will get better gas mileage and run faster. Just compare the fuel economy numbers of an SUV/truck to the mpg of a car (with the same displacement engine and similar weight). And look at NASCAR or NHRA cars. The air dams and skirts almost touch the ground. They do not want wind drag under the car. John Lingenfelter documented a sizeable difference in top speed numbers on one of his Corvettes by adding an air dam & skirting the sides of the car. He felt that the air hitting the front of the tires was enough to limit top speed obtainable.

Another consideration are the advancements in tires and suspensions. A lot of the factory suspensions were so flimsy that a straight axle was preferred and the upgrade raised the ride height. The rear was raised to match the front but also because there was no limit to the tire width you could add once the vehicle was higher than the wheel lip. Now we have better tires so you don't need as much tire to get traction. Now we have wheel tubs and the aftermarket has kits to move leafsprings in-board, narrowed differentials, & etc.

I first started noticing muscle cars in the early 1980s before I was old enough to drive. Back then, N-50s, air shocks, L88 hood scoops, Glasspacks dumped in front of the tires, etc were the "hot" thing. I'd actually like to see this look come back. I LOVE nostalgia hot rods... People are already reviving the gasser / super stock look. This would be the next logical progression.

To me, this only works on the 68-up cars (maybe 66-up for a-bodies). By the time this style was hip, I don't remember too many people were messing with the older stuff, since newer, higher powered cars could be had for cheap.

Everything that TPINOVA said is absolutely dead on correct.:yes::yes:

That being said, I love to have to fight to keep the thing in the groove on the road all the while stabbing the clutch to grab the next gear. I also appreciate sounds coming from the suspension the make me wonder whether or not something is about to exit the vehicle.

Next on my list is getting something big and chrome with a couple a carbs on it sticking up through the hood.......:devil::devil::devil:

No. I've never felt compelled to do that to a car. For some strange reason, I was born thinking that a car jacked up that high in the back looks like an animal with a corn-cob shoved up it's butt. :D

Of course, to each his own. It's a personal preference. I prefer 4x4s that are stock height to lift kits too. So, if you like it, run with it. But I don't want it on my car.

Haha!! Everybody starts out somewhere - that was a 6shooter to boot :) I ended up installing a 350/th350 when the 250 took an oil dump - it was more fun with the V8 that's for sure. I sold it to raise funds for my last year of college, but within 2 years of graduating I had bought a one-owner '72 with 60k miles - it didn't get the stinkbug treatment!

the only reason I got my "new" '72 Rally factory 4 speed car was the previous owners attempt at building rear flares to fit 12" rims.
he killed a perfectly good set of quarters to do it,got that all knocked off in favor of rolled stock edges.
save the flares for the old vans..as far as the "Old School" look,I grew up in the 70's and it still is "cool" to me.

I disagree, in my high school there was a guy who did his 64 El Camino sky high and it was one of the coolest cars around the school (we had a hemi Super Bee, an Alfa Romeo w/289 F**D and 5.50 gears, 440 6-pack Road Runner, 68 SS396 Chevelle that was a Car Craft project car, a couple vans that had healthy V-8's in them, a low 14 sec. 6 cyl/4 spd. 50 Chevy p.u., a low 13 sec. 69 GTO, etc.......) After he sold the El Camino he jacked up a beautiful 57 Nomad powered by a badazz Pontiac engine and it looked pretty cool. I am a 3rd gen owner, but I just don't care for the way they look up in the air, but I am looking at doing my 64 Chevelle wagon WAY up there; I have a set of 15x4 and 15x10 Cragar S/S wheels crying out for a home. Now I need some N50's or some of the old Goodyear Sports Car Specials, or Bridgestone Indy tires we ran back then--real wide and kinda low.

Those reversed 14x10 or 15 x10 rims and fat 60 series tires give that effect, don't they?
