just wondering what everyone is using for floor shifters, how hard is it to switch from a column shift to a floor shift.. i was thinking about buying either a b&m hammer shifter, or a b&m unimatic shifter.. if you were wondering, im not planning on running it at the track, just as a cruiser.. please help.. thanks Tom

I had a B&M Sport shifter...easiest to use aftermarket floor shifter there is. The only problem was that it was hard manually shift it when racing without missing a gear...but for a cruiser I'd use it

installation was 3-4 self tap in screws and you have to cut little hole in the floor for the shift cable. Just disconnect/remove the stock shifter linkage and run the cable. Route the cable so that it doesn't hit the exhaust or anything that could burn the cable...

isnt there something to do with a neutral safety switch or something??

You'll need to take the neutral safety switch wires off of the switch at the base of the steering column, extend them, and run them to the micro-switch on the shifter. It's pretty easy and simple.

The reverse light switch is very similar.

It's not a great picture of the shifter, but I hope this helps you out..As you can see a lot of options to choose from...It really depends on what you want or how you see it looking in your car...

I have a B&M Pro Ratchet and it is great. Easy to use, and looks good. Some people think its hard to use, but its not if you know how to use it properly.

My dad has the same one in his 64.

I have a B&M Megashifter and really love it because you are always sure what gear you have it in and can't miss an up or down shift. http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh90/albert4648/misc%20Deuce%20pics/102_9508.jpg

Just put a B&M mega shifter in my 73 yesterday. I've never installed a shifter before or worked on a transmission. With the instructions they provide it took me about 3 hours...and I was taking things pretty slow.

I just need to finish up the cosmetic stuff...with the housing, lights, etc.

The correct wires need to go to the correct switch on the shifter. The ignition wire needs to go to the switch that is engages while the shifter is in the PARK position. The reverse lights go to the switch that is engaged while the shifter is in the REVERSE positon. Just cut the wires at the column and extend them to the shifter.

I put the B&M Hammer shifter in my car. Works well with the 700R4..

I actually wrecked the cable, my fault. I tore the outer plastic shield which was hard to do but with my luck it was easy. The plastic shield holds all the lil wires together that make it function as a solid piece. With the plastic gone the wires were flexing outward and not transmitting the force to the tranny..

The shifter is nice, the nicest part is the grip, fits well in the hand. The shifter can be used as a manual shifter, which all can really. But if you switch it into manual mode you just push it up for every gear, or back. No gates to position into, just ratchet. Push, change, push change and so on.. With all that it is confusing. You gotta make sure to shift. And to get it into and out of the two modes it can be confusing. I just keep it in automatic... JR

I used a Lokar tail-shaft mounted shifter on a 700r4. It bolts directly to the tranny and uses a steel rod w/ spherical rod ends for linkage.

For cruising, it's great, but for racing, it's crap. No positive stops, just detents for each gear. Easy to miss a shift. :(

I switched to this because I burned 2 cables on the exhaust. (B&M QuickSilver) (I could have sworn I had each one secure, too)

wagonman,
Hey man your shifter looks great. How close is the shift knob to the seat when in low gear, and also when driving do you have to lean over to shift or is it within reach? Thanks for any info you can provide.
Brandon
