Can anyone tell me how to tell if a 66 or 67 Nova is a true from the factory SS. Would it say on the title, Is there a specific code in the VIN, or in the engine bay. Is there a way to tell by items that came on the car other than badges that someone could put on? What motor and or trans combination would an SS have? I am looking to purchase a true 66 or 67 SS to restore and would like to be absolutely certian of what I am getting. If I can find one with the original motor and trans, is it easier to tell if it is a true SS? If original motor and trans are missing how could you be certian it was a true SS?

Thanks ,and if anyone knows of any 66 or 67 True SS Novas for sale, in need of restoration and you are not going to puchase it yourself please let me know. I am in Illinois and can pick it up myself but if its far away and the price is fair I would have it shipped.

Thanks Again,

The drivers door jamb VIN plate will tell you if a 66 or 67 is an SS. Look for 11837 (V/8) or 11737 (6 cylinder). The cowl tag's usually indicate 11837 whether the car was a V/8 or not. The VIN is the truth!

You can also verify everything by the partial vin # stamped on the cowl behind the drivers fender .

Look for the numbers like CdnL79 Registry said, also, my car has the 11837 stamped in the rear quarter sheetmetal in the channel near the trunk weatherstripping (note: this is only good if the car has the original quarters). Remember: the cowl tags can be faked.

I've never heard of that # being on the quarter like you mention. the #'s that are there should be the part# for the quarter panels. My car is a real SS, with original 1/4's, and it does'nt have that #.

My 66 has the 11837 # stamped on both rear quarter channels. Mine was a 6 cylinder ss (now a v8) with the 11737 vin. All the ss chevy II's had the 118 cowl tag but what they mated to the body (6 or 8 cyliner) determined the vin.

Interesting. Must not be on all then. Maybe a 66 thing?
