Using 1/2 valves to fill, 3/8 valves to dump?

BTHOMAS67Wagon

Was reading a thread the other day and someone (might have been a ChevyII) would dump air too quickly with 1/2 dump valves and put some restrickers on the 4 dump valves to not dump the air so quickly.

The other option would be to place 3/8 valves for the dumps and keep the 1/2 valves to fill?

What do you all think about that setup vs. 1/2 valve restrickers?

thanks

Then you would have to run a t-reducer from the 1/2 to 3/8 line.
Unless you have 2 fittings coming out of the bag.. Plus all that extra line.

It seems that if you buy 4 3/8 and 4 1/2 valves you can save your self $60-80 bucks and depending on where you place your valves and how much line you use, add back in $20-30 bucks and some t's (add back in a couple of bucks...).

I guess all and all, it's about the same in price, but if you go with 1/2 valves and then purchase some reducers or adjustable reducers, you are not only purchasing the 8 1/2 Valves at "$350", but then adding another $10-60 bucks.

Just curious as to if anyone had gone the 4 1/2 and 4 3/8 valve route?

Try searching on the HAMB forum. I think you have to register to search but there's tons of posts on bag setups and there's quite a few guys that seem to know there stuff.

I use 3/8" lines and valves and the dump and fill times are fine for me. Going up too fast makes it difficult to pressure to system to the exact pressure needed. You want the front to be consistant in the pressure that you have determined to give you the best ride and the hieght you want. Your car is(or should be) aligned at that height. If I had an auto level system the 3/8" line would still be good because the fill time is less then 3 seconds for the front. I think I can continue to wait 3 seconds.

I am going to be using Slam Specialties bags which are 1/2 inch bags, so I guess if I went the route of "all 3/8" then I would/should reduce at the bag from 1/2 to 3/8, not a big deal I guess...

You cant get a 1/2 fitting for the bags to run a 3/8 line:confused::confused:

BTHOMAS67Wagon
27th-March-2008, 11:31 AM
Yes, I can and will probably get 4 reducers for the bags and just go all 3/8 inch valves, lines and fittings.

3/8 line --> 3/8 to 1/2 adapter --> to 1/2 Bag Ports.

I guess that would save money and be the easiest, huh? :) :) :)

Thanks for letting me ping my thoughts!!

Also, I think 8 SMC 3/8 valves for $200 is the best I have found.

Anyone know of a better price?

Are you sure you have 1/2 fittings? they dont show anything here that says 1/2 x 1/2 only 3/8 x 1/2- 3/8 x3/8:confused::confused:

I think/thought all Slam Specialties "RE" bags were 1/2 ports?

I would then purchase 4 of these elbows, which woulid be perfect to come out of the tube (on the front) and would be fine for the rear as well.

($10 per fitting seems steep to me, but then again, i save a lot by doing the 3/8 tube and 3/8 valves and get a slower rise and drop)

Are we on the same page?!

I just checked air lifts web site and they also have 1/2in mnpt-3/8in tube so you can slow down your drop

BTHOMAS67Wagon
27th-March-2008, 03:25 PM
Slowing of the drop would be because the 3/8 inch valve (okay and line) and not the fitting. The fitting would allow the 1/2 ported bag to attched to a 3/8 line.

I guess if I really wanted to slow drop I could put a 1/4 inch reducer or a adjustable 3/8 adapter on the drop valve, but for now, I think 3/8 should be fine.

(right?!)

Those are the same ones that I have. They are $12.00 ea around here. As far as slow... Mine are plenty fast enuf. Go to fast & you will have a hard time getting to your ride hight.

& yes we are on the same page:D

Sometimes I get a little:confused::confused::confused: I think it was with the 1/2 & 3/8 valves. Run one or the other but not both.

If you want adjustability on the speed of your dumps you can use these "valve flow controls". They also have built in silencers.

Yes, those are the adjusters I was talking about, but will have to wait and see if the 3/8 is too fast a drop.

I saw the on Suicidedoors and that looks like where the pic ref is from too.

all 3/8 lines and valves on my 63 longroof, its plenty fast enough for me... maybe you could find someone local or at a car show w/ bags and see the speed.... I don't think you'll be dissapointed w/ the speed of the 3/8 set up..... (deffinatly wouldn't recomend 1/4, seems to be waaaay slower from what I've seen.)

I've had many S-10's that I've bagged and done some custom work too. I always bought my air management from suicidedoors.com I always used 3/8" valves with 1/2" line just for the fact the inside diameter of the 1/2" line is 3/8's so the air flows good with minimal interuptions. If you run 1/2" valves with 1/2" line your just wasting money. If anybody has any questions about different things PM me and I can steer you in the right direction on what products are better then others. Here is a picture of my last project that I sold for my nova.

Right now, my Shopping cart is at about a grand and I still need...

1. Complete 3/8 fittings
2. Tank
3. Compressor
4. Switches
5. Gauges
6. Oiler, check valve
7. Fab some Upper A Arm bag mounts

Can you think of anything else???

What kind of compressor are you going with? Engine Driven or electric? Are you doing FBSS? I bought this controller off of ebay and it looks pretty good but haven't used it yet.

Hence, the 8 valves, yes FSBB. :) :)
(just poking fun!!)

I was going to do 4 valves (ie. FB), and then started reading more about the pressure and load on corners and then though about doing a 6 valve setup, but then just decided to go ahead and "make it easy" and stick with the tried and true 8 valve setup.

I am going to do an electric compressor(s), but am still up in the air as to if I am going to put dual compressors (ie. 480c or 400) or if a single compressor will do?!

Because I am going to have the tank "hidden" under the cargo floor
(36x8, 10-12 deep compartment), I will have to be a smaller tank and am not really sure as to what warrants a single compressor vs dual vs a large tank vs small tank?

(All the valves and compressors will also be in a seperate "hidden" panel under the floor as well.)

I don't want a huge box (like the plexiglass type) laying around the front seat, so I plan on having the gauges and switches in a stealthy manor as well, but have not decided the exact location just yet.

Thanks
Brent

I have used Viair compressors and DC7's from airbagit.com and I had more problem with the viairs then I ever did with the DC7's and they fill the tanks faster on my truck I had 2 6 gallons. I had gauges and I ended taking them out once you get used to it you won't even look at the gauges you'll go off feel. I also bought all my fitting at lowes all of them cheaper and easier then buying them online. Whatever you do don't buy any type of wireless remote to control the valves b/c as soon as the compressors kick on the magnetic field or what ever the hell it is will screw with the wireless signal. I learned that from experience.

I fit all my components under the rear cargo area behind the gas tank.... the compressor and 2 -2 gallon tanks linked end to end are a very tight squeze, but they fit. Didn't want to take up any space in the cargo area like you're planning. Take very good measurements before you buy anything, on mine I have to shove everything up into the underfloor area and then assemble it while it's up there. It's kinda like a building a ship in a bottle.....
I havn't done it yet.. but I planned on building a belly pan for that rear section to hide it all for a clean look.
oh yeah.. there's plenty of room under the dash to fit all you swithes up out of sight, I've got mine under the light switch, back past where the bottom of the dash ends.
