Well, I kept putting it off, but the persistent drip of grease from the pitman shaft convinced me that this is not a part of my resto that I can avoid. It's now or never, since I was getting ready to bolt on the headers. I got the column out and the box out without much trouble. I opened up the box today. Looks okay, just a bunch of old caked grease in it. I know I need the cover gasket and the pitman shaft seal. Are there any other parts I should consider replacing? And most importantly, where can I get them?

I hear www.nnnova.com sells a full rebuild kit at a good price. I may be ordering one in the next month or so myself. Just dreading pulling the old one out.

Parts from nnnova were shipped promptly and arrived in just a few days. Kit looks to be just what the doctor ordered. I was a little apprehensive about driving out the old bearing races and bushings, but so far, the disassembly has gone smoothly. I am grateful for the info provided elsewhere for the Corvette steering box, since the kit does not come with instructions!

I think the 63 box is the same as the 66. I just got my races back in yesterday. It was a real chore!
I've tried before but no luck so I tried this... not sure if it helped but I finally got it done and struggled greatly till yesterday.
Put the box in the oven to warm it up... 250 degrees for about 2 hours.
Put the race (this is the bottom worm gear race) in the freezer...
My first attempt months ago I broke the race putting it in...
Well with a press and a warmed up steering box and a chilled down race I finally got the race in...
I'm ready to proceed...
Is your manual? WHat are you going to use for the lub in the steering box?
Good luck with your race for the worm shaft.

Thanks! Yes, it's a manual box. I actually got it all back together yesterday. I was able to drive the new bushings and bearing races in without a problem. I warmed the box up a little and froze the bushings, but didn't even do that for the bearing races. Just used a socket that was just smaller than the bore, and checked frequently to make sure it was going in evenly.
I used some NAPA general purpose chassis and wheel bearing grease. I've read somewhere that chassis grease is the proper lube. I think that's in the 1966 Chevy chassis manual.
