I have the original steering box in my 63 and wanted to replace with a quick ratio. I am looking for a bolt in replacement and am not looking for power yet. my understanding is that the power boxes are able to function manually also. Then later I can buy a pump if I want Power Steering. Is this correct?

Will the below CPP part bolt in as a replacement to stock if I do not have power steering? (They don't stock a non power option)

CP6537V Original Replacement Power Steering Box quick ratio

I have a question about the mini subframe kits also. I have read a lot of info about these and about a lot of guys who have installed them. But, I have read about some manufacturing issues with short bolts for the ball joints and other random issues. Has anyone orderd a kit recently and been able to install with no issues? Am I going to be driving to the parts store to buy the moog ball joints and other parts. I think the eccentrics were mentioned a time or two also. I want to buy the kit but don't want to have a bunch of issues installing. Thoughts?

Not a vendor bash, by the way.

thanks,
cale

The power steering box is for the 68-74 Nova’s

The complaints about the hardware for the Mini-subfame kit are rare. The alignment cams are the same as the original cams. Unfortunately GM no longer makes these cams, and we are left with buying them from reputable alignment supply companies. They have made many improvements in there quality. As far as the upper ball joint; we sent this with a self locking nut. It is much stronger, and safer than the cotter pin, however many people wanted to use the old style slotted nut and the cotter pin will not line up. All of the new vehicles use the self locking nuts. It is stronger and safer. A cotter pin keeps the nut from falling off after it becomes loose. A self locking nut never becomes loose. If you do have any problems call us we will get it corrected immediately. Any one who had a problem and called got new parts shipped out the same day. I want to make it clear that there were very few instances. We have shipped thousands and thousands of these with maybe 10 total complaints about hardware.

If you have any other concerns call me at (714) 522-2000.

Thanks, Danny for the quick response. I appreciate it. I want to be clear that I was not trying to spread bad word about CPP products. I wasn't. I think your products are great and I like the fact that you guys are there to answer and resolve any questions.

Is there a quick ratio box for a 63?

I would like to do both of these installs at the same time and align it once. I do want to order the sub kit and figured these were isolated instances but just wanted to verify that these were in fact isolated instances. Sounds great, thanks again.

If a later model power steering box can be used as a bolt in replacement for an early Nova manual steering box, that is a new one to me. What I do know is that Wayne at National Nostalgic Nova rebuilt and sold early steering boxes with the quicker ratio gear a couple years back, but they are hard to find now. I do remember reading that the gears are from a Corvette, and anyone knowledgable about steering boxes should be able to do the swap. You might want to get in touch with Chip at http://www.powersteering.com I have not used them, but have heard good things about them.
