I am going on Monday to look at a first generation 5 lug non posi 2.73 rear. The person that owns the rear wants me to make an offer for the rear. What do these rears normally sell for and what kind of offer should I make?
Thank you,
novamaniac

Location will have a lot to do with the value of the rear end. If it's the only one for 200 miles around it will be more valuable than one in California.

I've paid around $100-150 for them. Assuming it's good.

That sounds just about right.

Is there a way to tell if it is good while it is off the car?

Just a heads-up...

Bring your tapemeasure. Stock gear ratios for 1st/2nd gen are 3.08 or 3.36. 2.73 wasn't available until '68.

It's certainly possible someone added those gears, and it's also possible someone miscounted when figuring out the ratio, but...it's also possible it's not a 1st/2nd gen diff. 1st/2nd gen diffs are about 2" narrower overall than 3rd gen ones, and while it will "fit", it seriously limits your tire choices and may require a different driveshaft. (Mine was set up that way when I first got it...)

Save yourself a drive and verify that it's the right part first.

And remember the cardinal rule of swapmeet buying: always ask what it fits, don't tell what you have first and then ask if it will fit that. Some sellers have parts that magically change to fit whatever you happen to ask about...

Ask the seller to tell you what the width is.

Thanks patman,
That will be really helpful. I have to go for some other parts so I can use this info. He said he pulled the rear from a 63 wagon, but I know it might be a replacement.

If it came off a 63 and it's a 5 lug, it's definitely not original. 64 was the first year for the 5 lug setups.

Good luck, hope it works out for ya...

I got the rear .

It measures correct for a 62-67 rear and I did find a number

BA 0317G 3.08 open gears

The only thing I could not figure out is what year car did it come out of. I see the BA code for 65-67..

Thanks for the help.

Great! Congrats on your find.

0317 is March 17th, but...you're right, it could be 65-67. It doesn't really make much difference unless you're doing a date-code-correct resto, as the guts are identical between those years.
