I am planning to put BF Goodrich Radial TAs on my 70 Nova. Anyone know the max size of this tire that will fit without rubbing or any other modifications? Thanks
Max Rear Tire Size on 70 Novadiesel_turbo 7th-February-2008, 11:09 AM I am planning to put BF Goodrich Radial TAs on my 70 Nova. Anyone know the max size of this tire that will fit without rubbing or any other modifications? Thanks ProchargedchevyI 7th-February-2008, 11:49 AM I've got Nitto 555R's that are 28" tall 275/60/15 on a 8" Weld Prostar with 5.5" BS - I had to use a .5" spacer and longer wheel studs, but everything fits without any rubbing. Your best bet is to get a backspacing tool and measuring for yourself before you drop any coin on new rollers. There's a ton of variance between the rear ends, and what might fit for me, might not work for you. There's a DIY to make your own backspacing tool. It's fairly simple to make, and it'll take the guesswork out of it. davidr5610 7th-February-2008, 12:06 PM I like 235 60 15s because you don't even have to worry about the tires rubbing. 15x7 wheels with 4 inch backspacing. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/12/web/2532000-2532999/2532222_40_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/12/web/2532000-2532999/2532222_92_full.jpg diesel_turbo 7th-February-2008, 12:06 PM I probably should have mentioned that I am putting the tires on 15x7corvette rallys. 1977stroked 7th-February-2008, 05:04 PM I know I dont have a 70 but I think they are the same. I have 255/60 15 with 4.5 inches of backspacing and it fits fine without rubbing. G_2 7th-February-2008, 05:07 PM I would follow what procharged is telling you about measuring your car for proper backspacing. With that said here is a picture of my 70 with 15x7 wheels with 4.25" of backspacing and 235/70R15 BFG. on the rear. On the right side wheel opening it is very tight. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k177/G_2_2006/12-24-067.jpg Here is another pic with 15x7 wheel with 4.5" of backspacing and a 275/60R15 http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k177/G_2_2006/saltflats/4-18-07Nova009.jpg diesel_turbo 7th-February-2008, 05:27 PM How do I measure the backspacing? I'm not sure what to do after I measure the backspacing. thanks Sonny Beech 7th-February-2008, 05:30 PM I have 255/70R15s on the 15x7 Corvette Rallys. I have scraped twice but only when my daughter and her friends were all jammed in the backseat and I was rolling down the poor condition freeways of San Jose, Ca. The car came with GM Factory air shocks and it still has air shocks but newer ones. I actually never figured out where it actually scraped. The air shocks only raise the rear no more than 1 inch over normal setting. The tires are Grand Am tires that will be dead of old age far before the tread is gone. Will replace them this spring. Also, there are no modifications to any part of the car body or springs (single leaf). Sonny YENKO DEUCE REG 7th-February-2008, 05:30 PM I've run old school L60 x 15's, not good, then 275 60 15's, better, however, 235 60 15's were great! M Puke Green 71 7th-February-2008, 06:40 PM Ive been told, and going to try 275/50/15 will work with a 5" back set, Back set is the distance from the back of your rim bolt surface to the outside of the back of the rim. you can check that with a straight edeg across the back of your rim. diesel_turbo 7th-February-2008, 09:02 PM When you say the outside of the rim to measure backspacing is that the most extreme edge or the same edge that you'd measure the rim width? thanks Ranaexcavating 7th-February-2008, 10:31 PM When you say the outside of the rim to measure backspacing is that the most extreme edge or the same edge that you'd measure the rim width? thanks When measuring backspacing you measure from the wheel mounting surface to the outer edge of the chassis part of the wheel, not the inside edge where the tire bead sits. diesel_turbo 7th-February-2008, 11:05 PM I measured the backspacing and it is 4". I also measured the room between the outside of the tire and the inside lift of the quarter panel. I have 3/4" room with 235/75/R15 on 15x7" rims. I'm guessing 255/60/r15 would be no problem. Could I go as high as 275/60/r15? That might be pushing it? Thanks MK70SS 8th-February-2008, 10:04 AM I probably should have mentioned that I am putting the tires on 15x7corvette rallys. This is my exact setup. I have 255 60 15's BFG's. kirk69nova 8th-February-2008, 10:21 AM What are you guys putting on the front. I have 215x70x14 on 14x7 corvette rally wheels (I forget the backspacing) and the drivers side rubs on the frame rail when I turn hard to the left. krl diesel_turbo 8th-February-2008, 03:40 PM This is my exact setup. I have 255 60 15's BFG's. Would you have been able to get bigger ones on? Also, what size do you have on the front? Thanks Nice car. | |
