I have a 72 Nova with the original steering box. My problem is the steering wheel turns with almost no effort. It's very easy to over steer then I end up over correcting. Very dangerous when drag racing. I've tried adjusting the screw on the top of the box with no significant improvement. Should I replace the steering box? If yes what would you recommend as a replacement? What ratio would be best? Thanks

It seems to me that not oversteering is just a basic part of driving in general. Just don't turn the wheel as far.

I agree.... No offense, but Nova's are NOT known for their "stock" steering to be "G" rated

When was the last time you had a front end alignment? Assuming the steering box is not at fault and your front end is 'tight' it could be your caster is out of wack...not enough or no positive caster.

The front suspension is all new and was professional aligned. It tracks as straight as an arrow. Thanks for the sugggestion

I'd go back and see if the front end can be alighned so it wants to go straighter which would make it harder to turn. On straight axel cars and cars with struts I lay the top back 12 to 14 degrees and they drive themselves straight. If you back up too fast and start turning the wheel it will make the tires go into steering shake cause it's way out of alighnment going backwards but drives itself forward. RM

Is there any play in the steerin? Mine is that way now but only after getting the idler arm and pitman replaced. Is it like more sensitive than a new car?

Yes there is all kinds of play. That's part of my problem. I have to turn the wheel maybe 15 degrees before the car responds. Then it turns to quick. I wonder why your Nova developed this after you replaced the idler and pitman arms. Could we both still have an alignment problem?
You don't need to know where you're going if you know the One who does!

I'd go back to the shop who did the alignment, they shouldn't let it go if it's handling like that.

Sounds like they might have pounded on the steering shaft too much to get the arm off and pounded the shaft into the box. I'd start with adjusting the box using the adjustment screw and jam nut to take up the play.
