The first NEW car my parents ever owned was a Nova, they think it was a 72, but they are not car people at all, and Im not a professional on Novas yet, can you tell me what year this car is in the background? Dont mind me....I was 4-5 years old at that point....:D:D http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/11/web/2519000-2519999/2519592_20_full.jpg

I see signal lights in the grille, so I would say it is a 73. It is really hard to see, but it also appears that it does not have wing windows, which a 72 would have.

x2 (1973)
Wheelcovers look like earlier SS covers from another car.
No bumper guards around the plate.......and I can't make out a bow tie in the center of the grill. Eliminates 74.
that might help a lil for you guys im not the best with photo editing maybe someone whos good with photoshop will help out and get a lil better resolution
i somewhat make out a white glimmer from the middle of the grill possibly an SS emblem? definately grill signal markers though so its a 73 or newer
you might check into the plates a lil more BORDERBUM your state might have change colors from one year to another but it definitely doesnt look like a 72 because of the grill unless your parents changed the grill...
best of luck! you sure got a challenge ahead of you!

Greetings,
I'm going to say '74 as I do believe that's the bowtie emblem on the grill and the front bumper has the 2 black bumperettes on either side of the license plate. Those hubcaps appear to be the factory ones from '73-'74.
So...1974 is my vote!

That's a tough pic but I vote 74 because of the push bars on the bumper and I think that's a bowtie on the grill too.

Ive blown the pic up as big as I could and cant really see the bumperete things on the side of the plate.......(as far as checking the plates , all of them were maroon in the 70s and early eightys..
There is a issue that the car was bought before I was born, and I was born in March of 73 that would mean the car had to be eather a late 72 or a early 73. a 74 would have been out of the question.....even though they arent car people, I doubt it would be that car off.....Im thinking 73 after what you all have pointed out.......but I dont know anything about the car other than it was a V8 , had a black vinle interior, and that they keep saying all these years that the carb sucked and never was right......I want to say that it had a slit bench seat as well........Automatic for sure.......

I did a little PS magic on the car, and after converting it to a little over 1000 dpi - I am going to hazard a guess and say it is a 1973 SS hatchback
On a close zoom, I see long bumper openings (73) and a grille emblem and large fender emblems stripe on the side looks pretty wide - would have only been an SS - only thing that throws me is the lack of passenger side mirror ( or me not being bale to see it)

looks like a 73. although i can't see a SS on the grille like some say is there.

your stripes might be body side molding. the stripes for a 73 are pretty wide in the front and tapper to the back. the lack of pass.sport mirror fails it as a SS since it was part of the SS option package

The new '73's would have been introduced in September of '72.

That quarter window looks like an earlier model.
However, you said that your parents said it was a 72, they probably bought it in 72, and after time, they just got into the idea of calling it a 72, because that's when they bought it. My dad's 64 was down in the DMV books as a 63, until I looked up the VIN, and it was a 64.
Over time, things are forgotton.

It's definately a 73 style. Probably bought late 72. This pics helps you see the window and the turn signals in the grille. The second picture is a little sharper and brighter.
