NovaShop.net 25th-January-2008, 12:57 AM I have a simple 2" dual exhaust on my 71'. I am putting on a set of flowmasters on, and I am thinking about just adding turn downs at the outlet of the mufflers. I not sure I like the my current straight pipes out under the rear bumper, plus you can see them from the side of the car under the rear rocker panel.
Question, has anyone just turn down there exhaust right under the car after the mufflers? Would this cause allot of interior resonance, with the sounds bouncing off the ground? Any issues with exhaust creeping inside the car? Thanks for the advice.
Jack
Luke Shaheen 25th-January-2008, 01:09 AM My car isn't sealed up very well yet so I decided to do 45's after my mufflers and the exhuast dumps before the back tires.
Codemans74 25th-January-2008, 02:09 AM my 2" exhaust does a S and dumps right after the rear tire

wow look at that suspension:no:
Stan Sixes 25th-January-2008, 03:08 AM I have 2" turndowns right after my mufflers. My tailpipes were getting pretty old so I removed them. I had to make the turndowns from 90 degree bends because I couldn't find any in 2".
Yes it's louder, especially in tunnels, narrow streets with buildings on both sides, parking garages etc. It's louder inside the car too. It's a matter of taste. I don't listen to the radio that much so I don't mind usually.
If I'm sitting idling with the defroster on I can get some fumes, depending on which way the wind is blowing. When moving it hasn't been a problem. I usually keep a window cracked open anyway.
We had a thread about turndowns a while back, with many replies and differing opinions, and some good pictures. I was going to post a link but I couldn't find it anymore. There are several others running them, mostly on bigger systems than mine. If you want it quiet, get a full length system.
taz3 25th-January-2008, 03:20 AM It's a matter of how much you like the sound of the engine, but it's an easy fix if you don't like it.You just need to add tail pipes.Mine are in the OE position after the rear wheels.
rodent 25th-January-2008, 04:03 AM Dual 3", no resonance :) sounds great :D I can converse with a passenger without yelling. I have 3" flowmasters under the house.......free to good or bad home :) I don't know about bouncing, mine are now bent to hit the ground out back of the car.

PowerMax 25th-January-2008, 12:05 PM Another thing to keep in mind is where you are from (US states anyway) - if you plan on using the car on the street. I know that in Pennsylvania, where they have annual vehicle inspections, the exhaust exit must clear the body of the car. I believe this is to prevent exhaust gases from entering into the passenger compartment. Not an issue at all in Ohio, were I live now.

chriss68 25th-January-2008, 01:13 PM in missouri, well in my county in missouri, it is illegal to have anything that stops before the rear axle. i love the sound of turn downs under the car, but i can never have it:(
i also have the exhaust running out the back under the bumper. you can buy 3" chrome straight exhaust tips that can bolt on to the pipe so that you dont have to look at the ugly tailpipe.

That's exactly what I want to do, thanks for all the good comments. In a few weeks, when I put the new mufflers on, I am going to drop the tailpipes and add a H connection. I don't have headers so my performance probably is not the best, but does it matter where I weld in the H?
Jason628 25th-January-2008, 09:43 PM Greetings,
I had turndowns right off of my Flowmaster 3-chamber 50 series and it was just too much noise inside the cabin for me. So I ran pipes all the way out the back and much, much better!
Pics of course,
Jason

hookemdevils22 26th-January-2008, 01:05 PM I originally had my exhaust exiting straight out the back. When we installed the ladder-bar rear suspension, we had to cut it down to gain access to the rear axle, etc. So we had a pair of turn-downs welded just after the mufflers. The difference is night and day. I'm running Hedman shorty headers, 2 1/2" pipes, and Flowmaster 40-series mufflers, and it is LOUD. It pumps out more bass than a hot import nights show just sitting in the garage (where the sound waves bounce around everywhere), and the same at about 1800 rpm under slight load. I love it.

Bluesman 27th-January-2008, 03:40 PM It's a matter of taste. Mine came straight back like Jason's and for some reason I just didn't much like the look. Just me. I was also a little worried about kicking up dust so I dumped them just like Ioldsnut, behind the tires and in front of the shackles.
Dave
fossilrunner 27th-January-2008, 04:12 PM I would do turndowns but thats just my opinion. I went with 2.5" round magnaflows dumped at the axle on my jimmy and it sounds awesome and theres no resonance inside.
On my nova im doing 3" dynatechs dumped at the axle.
Nova74ss 28th-January-2008, 12:17 AM mine uns allthe way back to the bumper, but i wanna redo it so it exits infront of the rear wheels
Dr. Denny 28th-January-2008, 01:00 AM I have 3" out to the bumper, I don't want the dust or noise. I think it sounds great.
68chevyll 28th-January-2008, 08:07 AM Here's one side. The only issue is the dust like John H. says:

elblako91 20th-February-2008, 11:42 PM Does anyone know if its illegal to dump it before the axle in Texas?
Scooter 20th-February-2008, 11:53 PM Yes it is, must exit beyond the passenger area. You can dump the pipes on a truck under the bed and behind the cab because the bed is just a cargo area, but on cars you gotta go out the sides or out the back.
Buuuuutttt, I've had a turndown on my 64 for about 3 years with no inspection problems.
elblako91 21st-February-2008, 12:06 AM Mkay Thanks
Andytheplatypus 23rd-February-2008, 11:19 PM 2.5" x pipe with 3" cherry bomb glass packs and turn downs. Pretty noisy on the inside but I'm not sure if its because I always drove it with the windows down or because of the rust hole in the trunk... Supprisingly, even with the hole i didnt smell any fumes in the car.
