Technically you don't need a pcv, and a lot of people just run 2 breathers, but a lot of guys run pcvs.
PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Basically, it sucks the excess pressure out of the block and through the motor and out the exhaust.
Without a pcv, you may experience a lot of oil coming out of the breathers, due to the crankcase pressure building up and forcing oil out, whereas the pcv draws air out, not oil. You also might build up enough pressure to push the dipstick out.

The pcv pulls the vapors out of the engine. If you have looked at a lot of cars with just breathers a lot of time you will see oil around the breathers. The pcv also relieves pressure.
You are better off to run a pcv valve. I ran dual breathers in my 408 and it had oil around the breathers. I put in the pcv and it stopped.

The same thing happened with me. I will definitely always run a pcv.
