Brake adjustment - self adjusters

I'm having a hard time adjusting each wheel with the stock drum slots. Since I have no self adjusters, must have been removed long ago, would this be a way to go? Does anyone have a good pic of what they look like installed or a reference.

Thanks

Great pic, thanks. Now I just gotta find the kits.

Does the self adjsuter seem like the way to go and/or other ideas?

manually adjusting them is fine providing it's done equally. there's a brake shoe/drum guage that's used if the wheels/drums are off that makes it a dream. otherwise an adjusting spoon is needed periodically. automatic adjusters work fine too if everything is working properly.

I've had it with trying to adjust, so I will try Napa or Carquest on Wednesday for adjuster kits.

Thanks

i'd make sure the starwheels are installed right on right, left on left and confirm they work properly first. if something's amiss, going to automatics aren't going to help...

Why the heck would anyone remove the self adjusters on their drum brakes:confused: The only car I've ever encountered a problem with on self adjusters is the rear of a Vega. It was re-invented for that particular application:( I would think it wouldn't cost too much to replace them.:)

These brakes could have the wrong hardware. How do I tell which way the starwheels operate and location? Maybe a pic of the fronts?

Thanks

the end of the starwheel has either a "L" or a "R" on it...

The flat plate that contacts the star wheel pushes down to tighten the brakes. This lengthens the adjuster. Turn your star wheel to simulate the star wheel being pushed down to see if you have the adjustors on the right side. On all four wheels, the adjuster pushes down so you'll need two rights and two lefts. The adjusters go on the rear (longer) shoe on either side, front or rear. The front brake is the same as the rear except for the park brake lever/cable.

I remember when self-adjusters first came out. Some people got rid of those "new fangled contraptions" because of suspicions they wouldn't work.
