First off, This is a great site! Lots of good info. I am separated from my 66 SS by about 700 miles right now, but that doesn't keep me from making plans for it in my head. I was finishing up a mini-tub on it when I had to move away for a job opportunity. I widened the stock tubs 5.5" each, and I am replacing the sheetmetal rails with Jegs' square tubing rails. I am either installing adjustable ladder bars (I already have) or going 4 link. My question is, from your experience, what is the largest diameter and width tire / wheel that I can put under the car and still make it sit nice and low. I want to run a wheel in the 18X12 neighborhood. Let's hear some opinions and personal experience. I'm going home to visit my baby in three days!!! Pics of your examples would also be great!

Thanks for the warm reception and all your help. Since you can't hear my voice, yes I am being sarcastic.

Are you still going to run leaf springs or coil overs? If it's coil overs you can go as wide as you want. And is that an 18" diameter wheel? With a 12" wide tire? Because I put a 11" tire in a 2" minitub. You can be sarcastic, but sometimes the people that can help you only log on at certain times. It just takes time to get info sometimes. Dave

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to take some pictures this week and get them posted. I'm going to run coilovers in the rear. I like the Mickey Thompson SRs in 18" diameter, but the problem with them (from the sizes I've seen) is that the really wide ones 16"-18" are in the 29" diameter range. I didn't mind cutting my car to widen the wells, but I don't want to loose my back seat. That's why I didn't make larger diameter wells while I was at it. Maybe I should have bought the wheels/tires and made them fit, but I couldn't afford to buy them when I started cutting on my car. So now I'm just trying to fill a 5.5" wider than stock well with as much rubber (in a low profile) as possible and still keep it close to the ground. Sorry about the sarcastic comment. It just looked like nobody even took the time to say, "sorry I can't help, but hi anyway". Pics to come.

Hey Lee!
The problem is not going to be getting them in, rather, it'll be getting them out! Most of it depends on how low you want the car. My car will be running at 4.5" at the cowl ride height with about a 1.5" rake going up to the rear.
I'm running 18" Wheels in the back with a 335/18/35 BFG KDW2's. The problem I have is not getting them in but if you get a flat when you raise the car the tire won't clear the quarter because the suspension won't drop down far enough to clear it. I had to have some rear shocks custom made so that they are longer and will extend to clear the quarter.

Well, I got to spend a little time with my baby over the Christmas holiday. I took some measurements as to the room my mini-tub created. I now have 16.5" wide (or deep) wheelwells and I was able to confirm that my 33" ladders would work without any more cutting. How do you think 315/35/17 BF drag radials on 12" rims (w/ as little B/S as I can get) would look? I took some pics, but I have to get them downloaded.

Hey welcome aboard! :D It may have been that most folks (at least I did) got to the "what size tire?" and tuned it out. That question comes up a million times and we have a good search function here. Again, wecome. :)
