So i came up with this idea for a project next year. I wanna build a really cool parts truck. This is what I came up with. It would be '83 s10 painted flat black with orange and green pinstiped flames. Lowered 4/6. Rally wheels.kinda rat rod styled. Now heres the kicker. I wanna take the 305 that we just pulled out of my nova and drop it in this. But I wanna supercharge it. I am more then likely going to do a procharger set up but not sure yet. Now I have some questions about internals on the motor?
How much boost can I safely run on 8:1 compression and cast pistons on 93 octane?
What model supercharger would you guys recomend for the street?
roots vs centrifigul?
Where is the best and cheapest place to buy from?

there are alot more variables for "safe" boost levels other than compression. Bore, stroke, cylender heads, camshaft, intake, caburater, timing curve all play just as important roles. I would say though that you would be safe in the 6-8 psi range on pump gas.
I think a centrifigul supercharger would be your best bet. They stay under the hood and are very effecient. Procharger and Vortech are both good brands. I personally run a Vortech and have had great success with them. Friends of mine run the Procharger with the same results. I would say research them both and see which one meets your needs. A procharger PB600 or the Vortech s trim or YSI depending on how agressive you wanna get.
WWW.Rhodescustomauto.com is a Vortech dealer in Delaware. Talk to Spence, hes very knowledgable and very fair on the prices.

about how much should I be looking to spend with a centrifigul set up such as the procharger pb600? I want this to be pretty street friendly so i wil stick with your advice of 6-8 lbs.
Say im making around 300hp at the crank on motor about what % increase will I see with 8lbs of boost?

HP % is hard to say. A general rule would be about a 40% increase. So I would say about 420hp, possiably more. Really all depends on the whole package.
I would be guessing on cost, but for the head unit, brackets, hat, blow off valve, piping you'd probably bee into it for about 3500.00 or so. Thats just a guess for the procharger.

With the economy the way it's going, I think you will find alot of "toys" for sale. You should be able to pick up a used supercharger for close to $2000. Make sure it will fit you application. If you buy one used, a pulley and belt change can cost $180+-. Be patient, there are deals out there. If you are concerned about costs, you need to look at the whole picture. This change will affect alot of things. You need to make sure your fuel system (pump, lines, etc.) is up to it. You will need a boost sensitive fuel regulator. Will you be using a blow through carb, or fuel injection? Have you thought about an intercooler or methanol injection? Will your transmission, converter, and rearend you currently have hold up to the added power? The supercharger will make the HP but, you need to know what your getting into.

These are all good points. A good blo-thru carb will set you back $1000.00 new. Good fuel pump and regulator another 600-800 bucks. Again it all depends on your HP goals. A cooler on a carbed car, in my opinion is worthless. the only type of cooler worth anything is an air to water and only if your runner ALOT of boost. An air to air would not benefit you at all.
I would keep it simple. It sounds like your looking for something reliable and very usable. Stick to the smaller blowers, lower boost and you'll be fine. You can always upgrade the fuel system later and turn up the boost.
I've been 8.58 @ 15psi on a Vortech YSI 540 BBC in a 3500lb radial tire car. Non- innercooled and carbed. Car is very streetable, taged, insured, and driven on the street.

I thought about a turbo. But I figured it was more expensive with all the tubing and all.

u'll be surprised how cheap a turbo kit can be put together, depending on ur skills. all these guys have good points. good luck on the build...
