I moved your thread to the 3rd gen forum. Your question is not about the originality of your car, it is about what would look better.

I am not a big fan of vinyl tops, but given the color choices, I too would go with black. IMO Navy blue is just odd.

Vynal...yuck. I dont like vynal tops, you could put the vynal trim on and paint the top that would look good.

Silver with a black top would look great.
I love vinyl tops.

That being said, they are a PITA if the car is going to sit outside...or be daily driven.
Moisture gets under the vinyl, the sun fades/cracks the material. They're more of a hassle than they're worth for a driver.

If you plan to garage it, and only cruise it occasionally...KEEP THE TOP!

JMHO.

Done right, they look really nice. From your chioces, I would go with black paint and black vinyl top. Of course, I don't like silver.

Ok guys.. whats with the vynal? Is that a way of making vinyl seem more anal? It comes from the word vinylidene - hence the first 5 letters making the word vinyl. Sorry.. had to do it...

I got it right! ;)

Some credit must be given, though...at least they remembered there was a "Y" in it! (Even if they put it in the wrong place!).

I like the vinyl sometimes. It puts a finishing touch on "classic" but if you want a hot rod look and attitude, I'd lose it.

Before I had my Nova I had a Dart with a nice white vinyl top, and a parking spot under a Madrona tree. Spent hours scrubbing the black specks out of that one.:( Had another Dart with a black vinyl top and it rusted and got all lumpy under it.:(:( Every time I wash my Nova with painted top I appreciate how much easier it is. And as mentioned already, there's the hot rod look:cool: I don't think I'd ever want another vinyl top, thank you.

I say hard top. But if you go vinyl do it black. As far as the body I like silver and black.

Silver with a black top, nice. Makes me miss my Camaro a bit.
This was the day I brought it home.

I remember a similar thread on another forum several months ago. I responded by saying that "vinyl tops don't have a hot rod look".Now that I own a LeMans Blue 70 Nova with a black vinyl top I wouldn't even consider eliminating the vinyl.
I love the period look of the vinyl top and it works for me.When I figure out how to post pics I will show you what I mean:rolleyes:

For the major sleeper look, go with blue paint/white vinyl. Run 10s in the quarter.

There is no reason to spell it wrong. It is so easy to cheat when replying.

Go with the silver and black vinyl top.

Here's one (not my car) that was at the 2007 Nova Nationals. It looked great!

Personally I don't care for the vinyl tops on my cars. But on the other hand a black car with a black vinyl top really kicks tail. The black over silver looks good also.

In my opinion i don't like the vinyl, but there is something more important than how it is looks like. How is your "cars top" condition? Because, if vinyl doesn't isolated very well it may result to major rust and damages on top. Think twice.

PS: Excuse for gramer and my worse english, because it's not my own language.

SerdarD, welcome to Steve's. Your english is fine. There are a great bunch of people here from all over the world. We also have have people from Argentina, Finland, Germany, Sweden, England, Puerto Rico and I'm sure others. What year Nova do you have? Do you have any pictures? If you have questions don't be afraid to ask. This is a very knowledgable group of people who just like old cars and Novas in particular.

It represents the 60's & 70's. I love the looks of it. I have a 74 Nova, blue with the black top. For 28 years my vinyl top was in great shape. It was a daily driver for years.
It's easy to maintain. Granted an extra step in the polishing process, but when it shined, it looked sharp. IMHO
So, I say, keep the vinyl. Silver or Black, you can't go wrong with either color.
My choice would the silver with the black top. It gives a great 2 tone effect.:)
Good luck!

Im not a big fan of Silver. a month before i purchased my nova the guy painted it silver :( I thought about repainting it but the look of silver with a Black vinyl top is growing on me... im gonna go with the black vinyl top & a black Yenko stripe kit to break up the silver ... i would go with the vinyl if thats what you like :)

Keep the vinyl top.Just put a black one on.If the body is really really good(no rust, dents, dings, waves)I would paint it black. But if the body is not perfect paint it silver.

I think vinyl looks great when done right and with a good color combo ie. silver/black. However as stated before it is a moisture trap and can cause real problems if left out in the elements over just a couple years.
