After dropping my tank yesterday, I need to empty about 1/4 of a tank of gas from it. I brought home a 5 gallon gas can to transfer the gas. I thought that if I just leaned it towards the filler end, the gas would come out, but it doesn't. I tried next by the end with the return and feed lines. Still nothing! Do I need to syphon the gas out or what?? My second question is how do I go about discarding the tank once it's empty?? I live in NY. Does anyone know if the sanitation dept. would take it? Thanks for any info. Billy.

Set it out for the trash and a scape metal guy will certainly pick it up.

Gas wont readily come out because the filler neck goes into the tank several inches therefore the fuel just goes around the neck. If the tank is junk just drill a hole in it at the corner flip it over and drian it into the container using a funnel.

I waited until we took the seasonal trailor full to the dump. Stuck it on the trailor. We have the guys that come buy and throw everything in the truck by hand. They don't like gas tanks :D
They don't take my unbagged shop garbage either

If you drill a hole, fill it up with water first, you don't want to create any sparks.
In most rural areas, they have a trash pickup day, a couple a year, where you throw all your junk you don't need anymore into a pile, and they come by and pick it all up. I've thrown away a gas tank that way before.

75% of scrap yards will take them if you get out your air chisel or double bladed axe and cut it in half
