Subframe Tear Down . . Finally!!

There's no turning back now! I've had the Heidt's subframe in my shed for almost a year now. My wife's due in May, so it's time to get moving. The tear down went pretty smooth, although the steering box put up a fight. I ended up taking the whole thing apart. In hind sight, I should have pulled the steering wheel, dropped the column and slid the whole thing out. I discovered a ton of rust in the lower cowl panels that needs to be fixed. Time to learn how to weld :) I really wish I had a bigger garage . . oh well. Keep an eye out in the classified section for one slightly used 65 subframe cheap :D Big thanks to everyone on this site for keeping me motivated

Can anyone recommend headers and show some pics? I would prefer full length, but not if they will cause major ground clearance issues ( i have 2" drop spindles ). I know this subject has been brought up a million times, but I'm looking for more specific info. Make / Model / Part number and pictures would be a huge help and probably save me a ton of money.

HAving been through this, would you recommend pulling the engine first, or pulling the whole thing as a unit? What probelms did the steering box cause? I would have thought you could have just unbolted it and left it in place on the firewall?

Just curious, as I will be pulling my subframe in the near future to repair some rust near the top mounting holes. Any tips would be great! :)

I don't see the need to pull the engine. I was a bit nervous about the weight shifting when unbolting the subframe, but as long as you strategically place your jackstands in the front and rear, it comes apart real easy. I couldn't pull the subframe with the steering box still attached to the column, b/c my headers were in the way. I thought the steering column would unbolt from the box, but apparently it does not. That's why I had to take apart the box. Taking the box apart was no big deal other that spilling a bit of gear oil.
