Help me out Jason628 18th-October-2007, 03:58 PM Greetings, Sounds like time for a new speedometer cable. It's a quick and easy fix. One side screws into the back of the speedometer, the other side screws into the transmission. Any of the parts places will have one. Jason Maxbebop 18th-October-2007, 04:04 PM wow, tanks for the quick reply, i'll check out, you know where i can download or obtain a diagram so i can do this in my garage? Bscman 18th-October-2007, 04:04 PM Check to make sure the cable didn't come loose in the back of the gauge cluster...it happens. Also check the end at the transmission. A single bolt and some wiggling will get the end free. Make sure the drive gears (nylon/plastic) are in good shape, and not missing teeth. If all that checks out...yup...time for a new cable. Most auto parts stores will have 'em. Just make sure you know what length you need--they are relatively cheap. Maxbebop 18th-October-2007, 05:25 PM Thanks alot for all the good info, you all saved me some money, and i found the cable at the store i normally get my nova stuff, 30 bucks, thanks again..... AgentNUB 18th-October-2007, 05:46 PM i just replaced the cable in my 73 nova not but a week ago... a few pointers. with all the screws out of the instrument cluster it may appear to catch still. even with the steering column dropped (four outer bolts on the mounting plate under the dash). chances are its the cable that links the shifter on the steering column to the needle that indicates your currently selected gear. for me the screw was a real pain to get unsiezed but after removing that the dash slid out far enough for my arm to reach behind it. oh, and the easiest way to remove the cable on the cluster side is to press the connector as far into the cluster as it will go then press down the clip completely. pull the connector straight out. wiggling usually will get it stuck right against the clip and not allow it to travel past its release point. hope those help -Reis | |
