slickman 3rd-August-2007, 09:17 PM I just got back from the shop who is doing all the work on my car for me. I would normally do it myself but, my shoulder is too screwed up and I'm having surgery Monday. The car is being delivered to me on Tuesday (because I wont be able to drive)
So, this guy who is also a casual friend owns a repair shop. He installed the new ZZ4, new clutch and pressure plate, new fly wheel, new drive shaft and a new eaton posi unit.
He had to pull the tranny two times because Summit wound up sending me the wrong parts twice (I have been getting all the parts). He's charging me $1,400..
What's you're thoughts?
Luke Shaheen 3rd-August-2007, 10:05 PM All that work and he's charging you 1400? I'd say your getting a pretty good deal. The going rates around here are about this:
Tranny - $300-$500
Rear Axel Carrier Swap - $400-$500
Motor - Several hundred. Never received a quote on this one.
By the way that was the quote I got for an automatic tranny where you simply bolt the flywheel to a convertor. not where you torque a pressure plate and all the crap to the exact spec. I've never done a manual tranny swap/drop but I've heard it isn't quick.
slickman 3rd-August-2007, 10:14 PM I assume the prices you are posting is labor only right? That's what I'm posting, this was labor only. There was another $600 on top of that for the cost of the new drive shaft, mini high tq starter, 5 qts oil, oil filter, cooling fluid and misc BS like that..
I have always done everything myself so, having someone do it for me is new to me. So, if everyone here thinks this is a good deal then I feel better.

KEITH'S75CUSTOM 3rd-August-2007, 10:26 PM thats sounds like a average price.
cause the motor drop alone usually wont be done for under 500.
just dropping and reinstalling the tranny for an auto is 100
and i think the manual with new parts installed is gonna run a few hundred just to put the new parts on so ad that with the drop price
and the rearend i have called several shops and they said about 350 to 400 for the install.
so its not a killer deal but it is a good deal cause the prices i listed are from the cheapest shops i could find. and it would come out about the same as your job.
taz3 3rd-August-2007, 10:31 PM Considering you can't just jump in on your car and wrench away(it's so clean) it's not a bad price at all.If you buy the book rate it's a real good deal. We're at $75-$100/hr up here.
slickman 3rd-August-2007, 10:36 PM I think the going rate in my area is $65-70 an hour..
littledeuce2 3rd-August-2007, 10:38 PM Don't forget he babying your car. Trying not scratch the paint. The shifter linkage has to set up perfect and all the fine tuning that goes along with the swap.
Dr. Denny 3rd-August-2007, 10:59 PM That sounds like a fair price. Back when I had a shop, if you supplied parts, especialy if you supplied the wrong parts twice. We as well as many shops would charge labor twice or 3 times or what ever it takes. Point is the guy is doing the labor multipal times, due to parts that he didn't supply. In many cases we would not do the work if the customer supplied the parts cause we didn't want to go through all that. 1 we didn't have time to do the 3 or 4 times weather we were getting paid 3 or 4 times for the same job, or we would use customer supplied parts once then we would get the parts and let the customer deal with the return. WOW that wasn't supposed to be that long!
Anyway good luck with the surgury and have fun with car!;)
slickman 4th-August-2007, 08:08 AM He has been understanding knowing full well Summit screwed up. He was going to get the parts but, he could not get the engine for two weeks, GM had it on back order. So, I said "you want me to get them?".. That's how it all started which worked out okay because I got the ZZ4 for $3800 from summit. Then they failed to tell me that the flywheel off my old engine (its a 4 speed) would not bolt up. I did not know they were not the same and the guy at the shop did not know as well. So, that was about a three day hold up. Then when the flywheel came and everything was installed, the bolts from the flywheel were hitting the center hub on the clutch plate. Turned out that you need to use a performance clutch kit with this flywheel. The center section is thicker which puts the bolts closer to the clutch disk. I did ask Summit on the phone when I purchased the flywheel if there was anything else or special I needed. Answer? No.. So, I order a new clutch assy (centerforce dual friction) and he pulled the tranny and bell housing to installed the new stuff.
So, I guess its a fair deal, not a great one.. He's telling me that the price should have been $2500..
Luke Shaheen 4th-August-2007, 11:32 AM Either way I think you've gotten a very good price. The quotes I posted above were just labour yes.
Looking back at my receipts from when I used to take my car to a mechanic labour usually doubled the costs of my parts. For every dollar in parts in normally took another to have them installed.
Steves 70SS 4th-August-2007, 04:20 PM Slickman, Figure it this way.If you had to do all that that work for someone else, How much would have you charge them. The main thing here is if your Happy with the way it turns out and the work he did on your car.Seems fear to me.Let us know asap how you like the motor.:D

Bscman 4th-August-2007, 06:21 PM Sounds like a great price based on shop rates in my area.
;)
Nova_Guy 4th-August-2007, 06:33 PM The GMC dealer here quoted me $90 an hour minimum of 1/2 hour on any job. Thats only 172,800 a year per mechanic. I bet the guys working on the cars only get about $15 of that money.
Dr. Denny 5th-August-2007, 02:48 AM There is no doubt you are getting a good deal! I would think myself lucky if I were you.:)
