Steering column swap?

hoping someone has pictures, instructions on how i can swap out a 63 column. my original column for my 63 was a column shift. i got a floor shift column years ago from ebay, but only now am i to the point where i am ready to use it. my problem is that the column i have has a different plug than my 63, and i was thinking it would be an easy swap to take the steering switch out of one and put it on the other. i just can't figure out how i am supposed to get the wires by without cutting them. i believe the floor shift sleeve is supposed to come off, as i have seen those on ebay. but i just can't figure out how.

thanks, Jesse

ok now i am really stuck... aside from cutting the wires which i don't wanna do. i can't get the plugs by the column shift delete part of the column... :( still hoping someone can "steer" me in the right direction to get the column swapped and be on my way.

thanks, Jesse

it's 3:12am my time and i'm kinda tired... lemme see if i can remember for ya... remove steering wheel. there's, i think, 3 small bolts that hold the turn signal collar assembly to the mainshaft tube, remove those... the turn signal assembly will rotate slightly and you can then remove it... under the column at the dash is a U strap that holds the column to the dash... 2 nuts... remove those and drop the column... further down on the column i believe there's a cover plate about 1" wide that covers the turn signal switch wires... remove it and then slide off the turn signal assembly from the mast jacket.

then the shift lever housing can be removed.

my brain is frazzled right now and i may be off by a little but i know i'm close. i'm sorry you haven't recieved any replies as of yet... it is kinda late for me... tomorrow i'll try and get ya some pics posted from the ChevyII assembly manual that might help ya further.

i wish ya luck... i'll get ya those images a bit later.

Johnny,

Thanks for posting the pics... so if I follow them correctly, I need to remove the shifter pin and the cover should come off? I have gotten up to the "F" piece off, but I can't figure out how the "H" piece comes out. Are "g" and "j" washers or nuts? Hopefully I get some time tomorrow to go check it. I like how you modified your existing column, and if I didn't have one already, i'd probably follow suite.

thanks again, Jesse

that's a roll pin that holds in the shift lever... use a punch to drive (tap) it out... yeah, those are thrust washers.

the mods were quite easy. take a look see at what ya have, even though ya already have a column maybe the mods are something you can do then sell the other column... or save it just in case.

edit... sometimes after years and years of service the shift lever housing is kinda sticky... take yer time... once lever is out it'll slide straight off... also UNDER the lever (inside) i "think" there's a small spring, about 1" long, 1/4" in diameter... don't lose it ;)
