Moving shocks inboard

I know this topic has been done a million times.

I have a 71 nova:
Stock Mono-leafs
Caltracs
Stock gas tank and Gas Lines

I am looking to move the shocks in board by either building/buying a setup to put the shocks inside the frame for more tire clearance for my 275 et streets. i only get a tiny bit of run around really sharp corners.

i will be looking to drag racing more so the setup should be geared towards that.

What kind of setup(brackets, tabs)?
What kind of shocks(stock, rancho(theones that calvert recommends), something else?

any help would be great

You can build a mount that sits all the way to the top of the under trunk area above the rearend and have the bottom shocks mount to the caltracs. You could also mount the shocks directly to the axle housing and run the shocks through the trunk floor to a mount that is made. I have the first but will be changing it some because I put to much angle in the shocks and will be putting them more upright.

I am using caltrac bars, rancho shocks and will be getting caltrac monoleafs soon..

I welded mounts to the axle and dented the subframe a bit to use the stock mounts on the body.

Performance Online sells a kit that relocates the shocks inboard. I installed mine last year and have been really happy with it. That along with new lowering multi leafsprings and it rides really nice.

There's a lot of good reading and pictures in this thread:

I ended up buying the Competition Engineering crossmember and already have the Caltracs so this will be a project for me for next winter.

Sweet could i get a picture of you underside of the car? that would be great. what did you have to do with the fuel lines? mine run all along the frame....

i made some new tire clearance for those 275 M/T streets with a BFH (big f*ckin hammer) and a die grinder to cut off dust shields on the shocks.

Plenty of info and pix.

Since you already have cal-tracs, I'd just go but a piece of square tubing and weld it in between your "frame" rails. Bolt the top side of the shocks to the new crossmember (square tubing) and the shocks to the cal-tracs (on the inside of the springs).
You may end up needing new shocks, with different eyelets or different length, to mount properly to the new crossmember.

Be sure to set up the shocks so that one goes infront of the axel and one attaches behind the axel, similar to the stock shock setup. this helps prevent wheelhop, which is the reason they were arranged like that from the factory (that and it made it so the same mount plate could be used on both sides...)

When I relocated my shocks the first time, I didn't know this and attached both to the rear side of the axle, and got wheelhop like none-other. I did eliminate most of the wheelhop with slapper bars, but putting the shocks in a similar way to how the factory did it eliminated the wheelhop entirely.
