Flying Scotsman 9th-May-2007, 08:00 PM Hi guys...
Getting my '70 ready for paint and ordered new emblems. Removing the trunk lid one should be fairly straightforward, and the '350's above the side markers i can see, but its the 'Nova' ones above the louvres on the front fenders i cant work hout how to get at
Am i going to have to remove the whole fender??
Any tips from those who have done it before or users with super-long fingers in the Columbus area would be appreciated. :D

TY70SS 9th-May-2007, 08:07 PM I would like to know the same thing.I will be painting my car soon to.
MK70SS 9th-May-2007, 08:21 PM Can't you get that off if you remove the wheel, then the inner fender well ? It's plastic and held on by several nuts. I believe then you can get to it faily easily.
johnnynogood 9th-May-2007, 09:44 PM That emblem is tricky and you DO need to remove the fender to get to the speed nuts. I suppose you can remove the wheel and inner fender, but that' be just as much work. I've got 68-69 fenders on my 72 and was still doing bodywork before I could install the emblems. So needlesstosay, no emblems on my car!

RatNova71 9th-May-2007, 10:00 PM If you have really skinny arms you can reach thru the door jamb and get the speednuts off.
Only other option is remove the fender.(or at least get it so loose you can swing the bottom out far enough to get your arm up in there) removing the wheel well will not do it.
why are you painting your car, it looks very nice to me.
72NovaSSman 9th-May-2007, 10:48 PM I was able to get the drivers side but had get the girl next door with skinny arms to get the RS on. Mainly because I wanted to paint the fenders on the car with out the emblems. good luck!

That is how I changed them on my '63. Skinny arms would've helped!!
wolfen 9th-May-2007, 11:29 PM Had to remove the fender as well....inner fender was not enough:(
davidr5610 10th-May-2007, 01:10 AM I used a gear wrench and reached through the door jamb. It took a long time to take them off. When I put them back on (after paint), I could only get one speed nut on each side, and I dropped the other ones into the bottom of the fender, so I glued the rest on.
big.mike 10th-May-2007, 03:39 AM Also, once you get them off and repaint, go to Pep Boys, Kragens, AutoZone it doesn't matter, and pick up a set of barrel clips. Get the size that fits over the studs of the emblems. Then after your car is painted, put the barrel clips in the fender holes and the emblem will slide into them and hold....Then if you need to take them off at a later time all you have to do is lightly pry them off. You won't have to worry about scratching your fenders or doors because you need to reinstall the emblems :D

Schonyenko2 11th-May-2007, 01:13 AM Mike is right on with the barrel nuts. They have been around a long time. In a collision shop if they were fixing a dent in the area of that emblem they would use a hard back putty knife to cut the prongs off the nova emblem, and later use barrel nuts to reinstall a new emblem. In collision work it's much faster to do it that way rather than take the fender off.

Good suggestion also.
Especially as i almost just broke my arm in the door jamb (gust of wind caught the door). Found out my left arm is skinny-er than my right too...strange :D
I can reach the nearest speed nuts with my fingers but the furthest ones are a no go without a wrench of some kind. I might give the putty knife thing a try.
TechNova 11th-May-2007, 12:45 PM Barrel clips have a tendency to chip the paint. They can also dent the fender if a guy gets the wrong size and gets aggressive aftermarket fenders dent easier.
If you plan on using them you have to keep cleaning out the holes in the fender with an Exacto knife as you are doing the body work and priming. The hole will get built up with material and will chip out when you put the barrel clip in. I used to clean them out good after priming so that I would only have sealer and color in the hole.
I haven't used any for about 15 years, I go the extra effort and put on the
tin nuts. Snap On makes a long 1/4" drive that has a flex on one end that I have used to put the nuts on. It can be turned by hand on one end and accepts a socket on the other.
Schonyenko2 12th-May-2007, 01:16 AM In most cases what we do is test fit everything up before paint. Disassemble the frt end, and shoot in pieces. Then we can put the emblem on after we buff the fender, then reassemble. We're fortunate to have the paint facilities to do that. Greg's right about the size, otherwise you will dent the fender trying to push the emblem in.
big.mike 12th-May-2007, 01:58 AM Yep, size DOES matter :D
