I need a new trunk floor for my '74. A guy I know has one for a '70. I looked on Goodmark's site and they list a trunk pan for 68-72, but not for '73-74.
Anyone know what is different about a 73-74 and if it is major? Maybe something to do with the 5 mph bumper??

The shape in the middle of the pan is different. 73/4 had a low spot to accomodate the spare. 72 and older it was flat and the spare mounted up higher in the trunk. Other than that I believe they are the same everywhere else.

That being the case, I'd rather have the 68-72 version anyway, I don't need the spare dip. Thanks 2slow72! I appreciate the help.

i think the difference is more than the shape of the floor, 68-72 had 18 gal tank and 73-79 have 21 gal tank. if you use the 68-72 trunk floor you need a 68-72 tank and sending unit, just have to solder and reuse your filler neck.

Fortunately, this is a race car and I'll be re-mounting a fuel cell in the trunk and won't have a tank, which is what makes the flatter 68-72 floor more attractive than the original. Thanks for the info though!

I looked at the replacement from Goodmark and I wonder if the info is correct on their measurements. They show 38.5" wide by 38" long. I measured the hatchfloor on my 74 and where it begins to dip down at the widest point halfway on the curve of the metal measures 39". If the measurements are correct from goodmark then it would be 1/2" too narrow to fit if you cut out the hatchfloor on the top flat where it begins to curve downward.
I noticed too on the picture from Goodmark that there looks to be stamped bumpout area's where I'm guessing the rear shackle/leaf spring mounts are at on the rear portion of the frame. It may not be too much of a problem with fitting a 38 1/2" wide replacement floor into a larger opening but a person may be able to bend up some of the original floor lip where it bends down on the 73 and up to take up this difference OR weld in a filler strip on one or both sides from front to back.
I also didn't see any gas tank mounts to use with the 68-72 trunk floor from Goodmark and looking again at my 74 I don't see those even coming close to working on the 68-72 floor as they are different from each other and on the driver's side the gas tank support follows the deeper floor section and the passenger side also follows the contour of the floor but not as much.
I'm far from an expert on the 68-72 trunk floors but the more I look at what's available aftermarket the more work I think will be needed to get it to work in a 73-up hatch or floor area.
If I was dead set on changing to the 68-72 floor in a 73-up model then I would look to find gas tank supports also. It looks like Goodmark sells replacement gas tank straps so then that would be taken care of. If I could get a floor out of a donor car that might be the better choice if it was solid.
Personally I like the contoured floor on my 73, 74 and 77 Nova's as it gives it a place to store the spare tire and the added fuel capacity.
I know a lot of people want to change things on the 73 and 74 models as there are different tastes and a limited amount of reproducton parts for them. Eventually I HOPE that Goodmark would do research to see how close the 1973 to 1979 trunk/hatch floors are to each other and tool up to make them. I think if it covers 7 years of cars compared to 5 years even though there may be less of a demand they could make money on the part.
I know it took a while to get the taillight panel reproduced as this too is/was a problem area on the 73/74 models.
Below is the measurement on my 74 Nova on the width where it begins to drop down. I just don't see the 38 1/2" replacement working easily.
Jim (who would like to see not only a trunk/hatch floor being made but things like hatchlid strut boots too).

The problem I see useing a 72 trunk pan on a 74 is that your frame rails are to close at the rear because the bumper shockes fit inside the last foot of the frame. If your going to use a fuel cell I would cut out the drop in the pan between the frame rails and fab up a flat pan to fit.

Well I bought the new-in-box 68-72 trunk floor for only $25 and will pick it up on Saturday and see how it lines up. If I end up not using it, I'll post it on sale and maybe someone can pick up a bargain.
