Whats worse than pulling a trans without a lift?

Installing new headers without a cherry picker.

I am was ready to sell this damn thing about a half hour ago.
I had to pull my oil pressure sender fitting, my oil filter, unbolt my steering box, and still had to beat the dang things till they popped into place. The only way to get my drivers side headers in was from under the car and it has been hell.

Drivers side header installs suck but I finally got them in place.

Are you using the correct style big block engine mounts for the frame?

I doubt it. I have moroso solid mounts in. They fit and have been in a couple months now.

I have to jack my 69 BB up high enough so the headers will be almost vertical and no beating and banging, but it's easier to lift the engine.

Have you tried the copper gaskets,I've got a set on order!I've heard they last longer.

Mine are dented for the steering box. They went in fairly easily, but I still don't have the fender aprons in place.

It is much easier if you unbolt the motor mount and jack the engine up once the cat is in the air. And if you don't have the correct frame mounts your headers will not fit correctly.

Reminds me of the time when i was installing headers on my big block Chevelle....I had to finagle the driver side in from underneath and the passenger one went in from above but I had to kick it in place.

Then I later learned it's easier to drop the headers in before the engine is sat down in there......and I just did drop in this engine.

How well do them solid mounts do for you? Any vibration in the car or anything?

Well I almost got it bolted in. I have had to put it in place and back off again umpteen times now and beat in my #7 pipe with a ball peen hammer where that little square corner is on the steering box. I cut it off the box but it wasn't enough. I have hammered a nice little dished spot on my #7 tube and the header almost seals now. One more tap or 2 and it is done. Then I need to install some 3.5-3" reducers for my exhaust.

I would have pulled the engine up but the picker I've borrowed/stored for a buddy of mine for the past 2 years is now gone. He came and got it a couple days ago.:(

As far as how the solid mounts do for me. The car shakes a bit when it idles. Thats about the only time I notice it. Not an annoyance by any means and looks tough as hell at a stoplight IMO. Doesn't bother me in the least.

Hey now. I have had 2 small bock novas with hooker headers and I seem to remember having hell with those every time it came to changing spark plugs. I had to pull a Mel Gibson lethal weapon move if I remember correctly and knock my arm out of socket just to get # 3,5,4,6 out.:D

Ok so I exaggerate a little, but its a breeze changing plugs on my rat.

When going from a 6 to a v-8, you may as well do it right the first time and get a big fat rat!  :D

Installing new headers without a cherry picker AND replacing a trans without a lift in a -30 canadian winter. Add on some bending of steel fuel lines, running new tranny cooler lines, oh ya and a brand new exhaust.

Who's next? I'm a first timer there's gotta be worse things out there... I couldn't have hit the worst already.

BTW, I had some tigth clearances with my headers aswell. However my power steering box was worth less to me then my headers so I shaved the bolt :p

My car was already 2 feet off the ground from putting the tranny in so my drivers side header was a snap putting in from underneath. Didn't have to remove nothing but one of the bolts on the top of the power steering gear cover.

But mine came with a mouse. Can't handle 6's. A guy at work has one in his pickup...made duel exaust with no mufflers. Sounds like a swarm of angry bees when he takes off.
