First, can anyone identify the rims in the pic of my car? whats the width, 6 inches?

The tires that came with the car are dry rotted to the point im scared they'll spontaniously blow...

the front tires are 195, the rears are 225... so im wondering, i know if its a 7 inch rim (im guessing no) i can get bigger meats out back.. if its a 6 inch rim, can i go any bigger out back? cause im buying new tires this week, ill think ill stick with the skinny 195's up front, but id like a bigger rear tire... thanks:) :D

judging from the trim ring I would say 14X7, it may have the size stamped on the back of the wheel

those are Nova rallys btw

I'd venture to say they're 14x7's as well..
If that's the case, I've run 235/60/14's with success in the past...had to keep the tires at about 26psi up front and 24psi in the rear to keep the treadwear even. I tried 245/60/14's and they were even worse--the center section likes to wear quickly. I doubt you'll be able to find anything wider than a 245 (without special ordering) for a 14" wheel...tires for 14's just aren't as common as 15" wheels.
Chalking the treat will give you a quick idea of your best PSI for proper tire wear.

If it's a 6" rim, I wouldn't go any wider than a 225...

Hi SuperSport623,

I agree with RatNova71 ... those are stock "Rally II" wheels that were available on Novas from 71 to 79. They were also used on Camaros and a few other Chevy cars from the same year range. And by the looks of the trim ring they appear to be 14x7's to me as well.

If I remember correctly, the size is stamped in the tire mounting area so it's not visible with a tire mounted. There is a 2 letter code stamped near the valve stem (visible with the trim ring off) that can be used to verify the width. Codes of "AV", "XZ", and "UD" are 14x7 while codes of "DE", "XW", and "UB" are 14x6.

I have that same style of wheel on both my Novas. I'm running 14x7's with 235/60R14 tires on my 74 and as Bscman said, that's about the widest commonly available 14" tire. The Firestone tires I'm using have an approved rim width of 6.5" to 8.5" and they're a good fit on the 7" rims without any unusual treadwear problems.
