From 62 until 67 the lower models were ChevyII, and the top of the line was Nova. As Taz said, 68 was the last year for the name ChevyII, but I am not sure if it was called both, or if in 68 there was still both models. Beginning in 69, all were called Nova, and the ChevyII name was gone.

So what was considered the "top" model from '62 to '67?

Here I fixed it for ya Randy!:D
From 62 until 67 the lower BUT MUCH COOLER :D models were ChevyII, and the top of the line was Nova (until years later when the Novas were destroyed by abuse and the Chevy II sedan came into the limelight:D ). As Taz said, 68 was the last year for the name ChevyII, but I am not sure if it was called both, or if in 68 there was still both models. Beginning in 69, all were called Nova, and the ChevyII name was gone.

68's are special :D

62-67 was a "Chevy II", in 68 it was called a "Chevy II Nova"

69 and up were just called "Nova"

68's have Nova badges on the quarters, Chevy II badges on the hood moulding and trunk lid. The dash emblem in 68 was in several configurations from ChevyII to Nova and Nova SS. The 68 Nova is also the only one to have the word "SUPER SPORT" written out on the front fender. They are just too cool.....  Also the last year GM had the key in the proper location (the dash ):D

i mean its lame because the only difference is badges. i mean theres no "REAL" difference. so if i had a 67 nova i could through chevy II badges on it and now its a chevy II?

No, it is not as simple as a badge swap. The different levels had different equipment, different trim, and different options. Seat coverings, door panels, windshield wiper motors, radios, wheel trim, floor covering, etc, etc were all different on the different models. What made each model was MUCH more than just badges.

From 62-67 the two door hardtop body style or convertible was always a "400" series, and was called Nova. The four door and wagon body styles were available as "100" or "300" which were cheaper, and had less equipment. For example, I think that carpeting was always optional on a 100, but standard on a 400. And the six cylinder engine was standard on a 400, while you could get either a four or six on the lower models. So the 100 series could really be a stripper. To make it more confusion, two door sedan was also available as 400 series, but only before 65. To get the exact details, you need the Chevrolet by the numbers books, study the model designations. There's also a lot of information on the brochures.

I also note the lack of an integrated sail panel prior to 68 - then they went with the quarter into the roof style.

I'm gonna convert a 69 to a 68, only because I couldn't find one to start with. All because I had a 68 once and have always regretted selling it. Its all about last year/first year details. Key on the dash is the coolest. I was amazed to find out how many differences there are just for that one aspect. I already bought a firewall out of a 68 so I have everything I need. It's gonna be alot of work, but I think it's worth it. The whole dash structure is one year only. Clutch pedal assy. one year( same as 67-68camaro). Temp controls one year. That make it all big dollar items. Hood and trunk emblem are sick too! My rectum still won't forgive me for what I just paid for a new hood emblem. The super sport script on the fenders are badass too! But the designation doesn't mean anything particular as with earlier models. No matter how you look at it, it's still the last deuce ever made! Rock on!!!

The one thing I prefer more, is the locking steering, a 68 can be stolen soooo quick and easily compared to a 69 up.
