I just ordered a new electric fan and will need to fab up a shroud for after I get it.
I'm going to build a template out of cardboard then transfer that to steel, but I don't trust myself to bend the metal (22ga steel) properly in my garage with the stuff I have available.
Do you guys know of anyone or anyplace in the PDX area that could do some relatively simple (I hope) metal bending for me? All I can find is roofing/ductwork metal people that don't appear to be small job auto consumer friendly.
Thanks,
Brent

Hey Brent, i know i'm not in your area so i can't help ya there... but i know whith the metal sheets i've purchased from my local supplier not only do they cut to size but can brake it also... ya might double check with your metal supplier and ask if he can brake it to your template...
i'd think they could hook ya up... oh, the HVAC guys you referred to are another good thought to persue ;)
hope i helped in some way ;)

You might try Russ Meeks @ www.finishlinecoatings.com. He has built some amazing Bonneville and show cars. If he cannot do it, it can probably send you to someone who can.

Got any trade schools or collages around. I've had the instructors do some small jobs and they don't mind doing it. They use it as part of their hands on instructions for the student. Nothing like a real world project.

Thanks Bruce, I shot FinishLine an email to see if they're interesting in the project.

Shane, I'll keep that idea in reserve. Thanks for the tip. :)

I found this place up by PIR while searching around the web tonight.
http://www.******.com/
Anyone have any experience with this place?? I sent them an email to see if they're interesting in talking to me about my plans for a fan shroud. If their website explanation is accurate, these guys sound perfect for what I need.

I got a reply from Russ @ xxxTech late that same evening. I love it when shops are responsive to their online customers when they have an online presence. :)
I'm going to drop off my plans to him this week, along with a sheet of steel, and have them cut and bend it for me.
Now I just need to decide what kind of finish to put on it. :D

Titanium powder coat.... :)
I'm not sure that would fit into the current "theme" in my engine compartment:

I'm currently thinking a satin or gloss black powder coat, or paint if I'm cheap, would work. Ignore the lack of detail work on wiring in the engine. It's on my ever-growing to-do list of things to finish properly. :o

It's all home-done. I reworked the OEM harness to better suit my needs.

i dunno if you found a place, but I've had good luck getting sheetmetal stuff made at heating places, the ones that install ducking and stuff. they do tons of sheetmetal work and you may be able to get them to do it.

That's my backup plan if things don't go well with xxxTech. :)
Thanks!

Too early to comment. Tomorrow or Tuesday should provide me with a definitive conclusion on this shop.

Do tell, I'm all ears. Or PM me if it isn't suitable for public consumption.

It looks like I need to find another sheet metal bender dude to do this for me.
I emailed the guys at Steve's Auto Restorations in PDX today with a description & picture of my shroud plan. They can improve upon it if they want to, but they look they might be a better choice for me to use. Not necessarily cheaper, but better.
This is all I want to have built. It shouldn't be difficult. :beat:

What I have heard is that shop"X" was famous for getting paid first then doing a piss poor job of fab work if it was even done at all.....:(

I can confirm that experience except for the piss-poor work part, since I don't have any evidence of any work done. I'm going to email him and tell him to forget it, I'm done playing around with a poor shop.
I got a response from Steve's Auto and I'm going to run a plan by them this week and see what they can do for me. :D They come highly recommended from SeattleMike.

Mike's stuff is nice so if he recommended them then go with it!!! ;)
And I didn't want to bash that shop before you had dealt with them but it looks as they are as shady as ever still.... :(

That's my thought too.
I'm of the opinion that a one man shop with previously shady behavior isn't going to turnaround overnight. I'd appreciate you speaking up if you've heard of poor performance.
I'd rather reward someone who has never done someone wrong rather than reward someone who is inconsistently wrong.

Terry, I think you're right. I'll call Marty. He's actually much closer to me than the Steves Auto and I already have previous experience with him. :)

Marty Strode is awesome!
Not only does he do great work (this is my second time using him), he's great to talk to. If it weren't for the fact that Terry was there when I showed up this morning, it'd have been a perfect trip. :p
Here's the shroud I had him build. We had to modify my plan a tiny bit because my design for the mounting flanges couldn't be done with his brake. Not a big deal because he just welded 90* flanges to replace what I had designed as bends. =D>
Now it just needs a trial fit and a coat of paint. I think I'm going to tackle my other issue (coolant leak/gasket issue) first though.
