spring madness

So I just got my 74 nova hatchback, (first real car.) I'm having problems with the front tires rubbing when I hit even the slightest bump, the tires are the right size and width so I think the springs may be a little weak. I just wanted to know if it is possible for the springs to weaken at all or if it may be some other factor. The car was a drag car before I got it.

Yes the springs do wear out.Do you have an inline six or v8 car?How do you know the tires and wheels are the same size?what size and backspace are your tires and wheels?bm

Not sure what the oem sizes are but If i had to make a guess it is right, I have a 5.7 in it right now but it needs some work and i'll be replacing it with a spare 383 roller laying in my dad's kitchen.

No, i'm not sure what size came with the car but the ones on the car seem to fit. It does have the original rims thought.

If your sure its not your wheels...I'd say its your springs then.check out www.p-s-t.com If you change your springs you'll want to do your shocks too.Monroe makes a very good shock.I have them and they ride very smooth.bm

I'd check your wheels/tires before jumping into a new suspension...unless of course you feel like you need new springs...
My guess would be your backspacing is putting your wheels too far out and they're rubbing near the outer lip of the wheel well.

But FWIW, I've run 235/60/14's and 215/75/15's (on my '72 nova) and never had a tire rub...no matter how hard I was turning, or if the suspension bottomed out (and it did A LOT before I replaced the 6cyl. springs for the correct v8 springs).

You say the tires are the right size and width in one post and in the following post you say "Not sure what the oem sizes are but If i had to make a guess it is right", so if you don't know, how can we help you? Just guessing but I'd say it's the wrong wheels and tires. You are going to need to do some measuring. Where are they rubbing...top, sides or what? Where are they rubbing...fender lip, top of wheelwell, inside of wheelwell or ???

Yeah, are you positive it's the tires rubbing? I'd check for signs of rubbing. Look on the sidewalls (both sides of the tire), and turn the wheels all the way to each direction and check the frame for any marks that look like they're from the tire rubbing.
