I found that my spring pads were torn up after only 500miles after my initial spring installation. I later decided to install Caltrac bars and removed them to avoid any future issues with them.

The only issue I had (due to the way my spring pack bolts were installed on my aftermarket multileaf springs) was that there was a gap between the axle tube and the spring after re-installation without the pads.

If you've got monoleaf springs, there should be no problem leaving the pads out. They're really just there for driver comfort.

Currently I'm running without the pads, but I had to make small spacers to fill some dead space to make the spring and the axle tube sit together flush again. The spring pads normally do this, but without them, and with the funky spring pack bolt, they were necessary for me.

I've got pics of it on my website on my Project Updates - Year 3 - Page 34.
