djfusion_1 2nd-February-2007, 01:19 PM When filling up your gas tank, when it gets full does the gas splash out. This has happened to me twice now:mad: . whenever I fill it up, the gas nozzel does not stop filling automatically and gas just splashes out causing embarrasment when people are around:o . While filling up the gas tank do you need to be holding the nozzel in with a little pressure. Thanks guys let me know so this won't happen again.:(
MK70SS 2nd-February-2007, 01:40 PM On older cars that were made to take regular gas, the fill nozzle to the tank is oversize compared to the gas pump nozzle. Thats the problemo
burty 2nd-February-2007, 01:43 PM You can pump it at wide open, but when you here it start to gurgle it is almost full. Then slow down your pumping, and you will get no more splash. I used to pump gas in high school and learned this trick. Dan

Bscman 2nd-February-2007, 02:16 PM W/ my '72, I can't hold squeeze the pump more than about 50%.
If I squeeze the trigger all the way I get a back-splash of gas even with an EMPTY tank.
Listen for the gurgle...you can tell when your tank is getting full.
That being said, I never fill over 3/4...as I prefer to keep as much gas as possible IN MY TANK! :D
MuscleDreams 2nd-February-2007, 03:02 PM Happens to me too. I never put over 10 gallons in it anymore.
djfusion_1 2nd-February-2007, 03:29 PM man, and I thought that it was just like filling up like a regular car. Once it fills up then it automatically stops with no spill:rolleyes: I hope I can hear the gurgle of the gas tank filling up next time or it will happen again three times i n a row:o
djfusion_1 2nd-February-2007, 03:32 PM When this happens, how do you guys get the smell of gas out. It seems that when this happened the next day there was a wet little spot of gas on the concrete under the gas tank. I spent about 8 minutes trying to rince under the gas tank as well as the licence plate because the smell of gas was just strong
Bscman 2nd-February-2007, 09:59 PM Just drive it! LOL...
The gas will dissipate pretty quick at 60mph!
goldie_71 2nd-February-2007, 10:17 PM That is unquestionably one of the most hated aspects of my Nova. I worked at a full-service gas station for about 8 years, so I'm somewhat of an old hand at pumping gas. But I can never seem to put gas in the Nova without it splashing everywhere.

Been there done that in the 70 Nova I used to own
john_L. 3rd-February-2007, 12:48 AM some stations have a round rubber splash guard thingy around the gas nozzle, which when held with slight pressure against the neck should eliminate any back splash, try to find which gas stations have incorporated such device and frequent that gas station.
onecarnut 3rd-February-2007, 07:30 PM I never noticed this problem on my 68 until I changed gas tanks. Now it overflows ever time I fill it up.
1qwikss 3rd-February-2007, 09:22 PM boy that's nothing, though i used to have that same problem.
when i was younger i was getting gas late one night with my old nova
and i guess i was really tired from just getting off work.
i "put the gas nozzle in" and started pumping just standing there when i happened to look up at the office where girls were working and they just kept pointing and waving then i looked down and saw it, i hadn't got the
nozzle in place and "washed" the bottom of the car with about $8. of gas (this was 1987) well i made up some story about the tank and promptly left all embarrassed. i never made that mistake again or went back to that station for that matter.:o
onephatz28 13th-February-2007, 05:42 AM I got my nove today and it did the same thing I thought the tank was bad but after reading this I think I am OK, I put about 13g in it, and gas was all over the place.
djfusion_1 13th-February-2007, 04:33 PM :D Welcome to the club buddy, I've learned my lesson and don't fill it to the top:o . I bet you just started fillin' up and left the nozzle pumping by itself and when the tank filled up all you heard was a splash and a strong smell of gas:D

This hasn't been my experience... :(
We have a few stations that have some new fangled spring loaded "splash guard" type thing on the handles...all it has managed to do for me is catch the backsplash and keep it off me----UNTIL I remove the nozzle from the tank...then it all pours out. Kind of like a delayed reaction...
I just make sure I don't fill it full by listening to the gurgle...and DON'T hold the pump nozzle wide open--anything more than 1/2-3/4 of the way and it backslpashes too...

Yes, unless you're using a fuel cell, that's been a problem with the earlier 3rd Gen. cars because of the fillpipe configuration, even with a new vented cap. You really notice fuel loss when you get on it, and the front end rises and pukes the gas back out the pipe. I've wrapped a foam oil filter element from a lawn tractor around the base of the fillpipe (where it goes into the tank) so that when the fuel comes out, and the remnants run down the pipe, it stops at the foam ring around the pipe, instead of leaking across the bottom of the gas tank, and hitting that HOT transverse muffler sitting directly behind the tank! I don't want any boom-booms!

Haha, I was driving mine on the day Katrina hit and gas prices skyrocketed over the course of a couple of hours. I immediately went to the gas station, filled up the Nova.....which proceeded to puke gas out the back. You should've seen the look on people when they noticed I had spilled some of that priceless gasoline. :o :D
