74' nova smog question

My '74 nova 350 came smog equiped, including vaccum lines running to the air cleaner for the heat stove heated by exhaust. Shortly after buying the car, i installed a 14'' Edelbrock Open Element air cleaner, and was unsure what to do with this now not needed vaccum line. I tryed running the car without it plugged, and stalled horribly, so i tryed plugging it, and it ran MUCH better. The only problem now is during cold days, the car stalls almost everytime you need to give it a little extra gas on take off, if the car isnt completly warmed up (really scary sometimes at intersections). did i do something wrong, or now that the air isnt being heated, i will just have to wait longer for the car to warm up before hitting the street to avoid stalling? on average it takes about 10-15 minutes before the car starts running ideally without having to worry about it stalling.

I never paid much attention to exactly how the smog and what the vacuum lines went where on my 74 with the V8 before I took it apart but from what I remember there is a tube that attached to a stamped steel housing on the passenger exhaust manifold and then this tube fit into a hole on the underside of the snorkel of the air cleaner. Inside the air cleaner right above this opening was a flapper valve that I have to assume was for cold weather operation. When cold it would pull air up this tube off of the exhaust manifold and then when hot or possibly full throttle this flapper door would open and bypass this tube. I think too it was tied into a backfire valve inside the air cleaner also but without looking at a shop manual this is all off of memory.

I have to think if something was changed and now it doesn't run right it could be from what was changed however it could just need an adjustment to compensate for this change like with the carb to get it working like before.

I wonder too if this is tied in with something else like the vacuum advance on the distributor. To really track how the system works may require a shop manual or something similiar.

your correct about the function of the vaccum line, but it appears to be tied into the intake manifold. i did have to do a little carb adjusting after changing the air cleaning system, but the stalling does not seem to be caused from the idle adjustment or mixture.im looking at the haynes manual now, but i cant seem to find any info on this vaccum line besides what its for and diagnosing problems with the vaccum/heat stove/bypass valve. maybe it just doesnt like cold air  it does say to plug the line if tuning the carb with the air cleaner removed. heres a pic i took earlier today, you can see the vaccum line with the bolt run into:

Turned out the hose itself had a pinhole in it, i removed the hose and plugged it at the outlet. Runs like a dream now ^^

Even though you fixed your problem, here are some pictures of the vacuum lines layout on my '74.

I haven't changed much on the car except the HEI and some hose clamps and the heater stove at the manifold had rusted off.
