The shaft does not detach from the box for removal. It comes out as a unit.

I have been trying to figure this out my self.
So the shaft and box come out as one unit? I had no idea.
I ordered a Chilton maual for the suspension info as well as some other things and it does not have steering box removal procedures in it. At least not in detail for the Chevy II.

I was doing a V8 swap at the same time and I dont see how it would be very easy with the engine still in unless you have a straight 6

On my 77nova the steering shaft has a bolt to loosen then it slids back on the shaft its self. The steering sector comes out by its self.Hope this helps.

on the 66 you need to take off the steering wheel and the entire shaft comes out with the box . you need to get the car very high off the ground to remove it. the box and the 3 ft( or so) shaft are one piece.

To clarify... You need to pull the steering wheel off, first. Next, you need to pull the column from inside the car. Carefully, remove the bracket underneath it and unplug the wire harness. I would also put a clean towel or something like it over the column and turn signal arm, this will protect your seats and/or headliner from getting damaged. Then, as has been said, raise the car a couple of feet off the ground and put the car securely on jack stands. Now, remove the left side motor mount after supporting the engine. You may actually have to raise the engine/trans. up against the transmission tunnel to gain enough clearance. Pull the pitman shaft off the arm, or the arm off the drag link and then remove the bolts holding the gear to the frame. This is still not easy and may take a little while to figure out how to orient the gear to get it to come own past everything. It's a pain in the *****, but it can be done.
