I am in the process of rebuilding the front end of my 1970. I will be changing all ball joints along with both tie rod ends.New springs bushings ect.
How can I tell if I should also put some new spindles on.I'm not sure how old they are.Disk brake car. When I took off the rotors they looked ok but felt while I was at it maybe I should change them too.
Do they last forever???

Do they last forever???
Or until they break! I never knew of one breaking without being involved in a crash until last week; a friend pulled into a driveway just as the spindle broke and the front end dropped to the ground! Good timing, as he just came off the freeway! He said in looking at the break, it had been starting to go for a while. This was on an early 90's Chevy pickup that has pretty stout parts.

Just clean 'em up real good and give them a close look.
If you don't see any cracking and nothing looks to be wearing irregularly, use what you've got.

Thanks for the reply's. I did clean them today and didn't see any cracks or anything that looked bad so I will keep them on and replace everything else around them.:)

Make sure you check the surface where the front bearings ride. If the car was poorly maintained or the bearings ran a little low on grease you can start to see some grooving in this area. I pulled two parts cars abart and had one spindle on each show signs of grooving. These were drum brake cars, but I'll bet disc brake cars could have the same problem.
