Doesn't look so bad...what are your plans?
novanutcase
1st-April-2006, 09:23 PM
Project plans are:
LS1 or 2
T-56
C-5 IFS
C-4 IRS
Full frame chassis w/ 6 point cage
Wilwood Superlites
Since I'm doing a full frame, I'm going to move the engine back as far as I can this way I can center as much of the gross weight of the car towards the center for handling. I also plan on moving the gas tank under the package tray so that the full tank weight will also be more centered. I'm trying to center as much of the weight of the car towards the center so that I can improve the handling of the car as much as possible. I'm even thinking of getting chromed fiberglass bumpers to reduce weight even further although that might be a little extreme! I'm going full frame so that I can take advantage of customizing my suspension choices along with being able to get the car REALLY low and not have to bag it!:chev:

I just got an e-mail from a guy that had asked me if I had finished the purchase of drivetrain since he was buying one from the same person. He just e-mailed me and told me that he contacted the e-bay member and he had NO KNOWLEDGE of any sale or transaction of a driveline. So .....BUYER BEWARE!!!!!

Now that I have finally gotten over almost getting ripped off on the drivetrain I have started the process of tearing down the car so I can see what the body has in store for me. So far it looks as if I made a pretty good choice for body since there doesn't seem to be much damage or rust but I still need to strip the paint off the body so that is next although my friend Jonny R and I pulled off the front clip and the rear window this evening. Here are a few pictures to document:

Just thought I would update you all on the progress of my project. I just finished stripping the main shell of the car and will now progress to the fenders, hood, and trunk. I also need to prime the main shell so it doesn't rust. I stripped the car to see what kind of rot the body shop is going to have to deal with. Doesn't look to bad other than the A-pillars.

Plans, at the moment, include:
Full frame chassis with 5" ride height at Cowl
Corvette C6 Lower control arms and custom Upper control arms(The damn C6 uppers are too long! That is what I originally wanted but I don't want to sacrifice performance for looks!)
Still up in the air(No pun intended!) about if I'm going to go with AirRide Shockwaves or Coilover.
Corvette C6 torque tube, 6 speed transaxle and differential
Hidden 6 point cage
LS2 with AFR heads, Comp Cam, FAST intake set back for better weight distribution and to clear the R & P.
Autometer Nexus Gauges
Hurst Shifter
Vintage Air
Power One piece windows
Ron Davis Radiator
Wilwood Superlite 6's in front and 4's in back
Budnik Ice 18's

Comments are welcome! Rodger, the fabricator, also is suggesting putting 335's in the back but I think this size tire will be too wide. It'll look like a streetsweeper from behind. I think 295's will look much more balanced. He's going to send me some photos and I will go up next week to see it in person. What do you think?

Im in Cali! The fabricator is in Bakersfield and I'm in Los Angeles. Yeah I thought the front wheel looks a bit large but they are 17's so I don't want to go any smaller and your probably right. Since they aren't blacked out they look bigger. The front wheel is set an 1 1/2" forward of stock and we are talking about filling in the rear part of the fender to not have the gap. Thinking of stretching the rear fender an inch to fit the larger tires. Not sure yet but will be working on it! Thanks for the compliments guys! I hope it turns out as well as I think it will!

Trying to decide if I should go with the 335's. Fabricator just sent me some mock up pics. I kind of like them but I'm not sure if they'll be overkill! Only thing I don't like about them is that they give the car a pro-street look and that isn't what I'm going for. I'd like a more high tech/road race look. What do you think!

Yeah, the guys at Ironworks Speed and Kustom are great! They're real eager to tear into the car and real excited about the build. Check out their site in the sig. Look at the C6-57 truck they're building. I think Truckin' magazine is doing a series on the build. We're in the process of ordering the drivetrain(C6 Corvette transaxle, diff and torque tube). The rear will be IRS. I've been trying to figure out how to do it and I think I finally did it so cross your fingers because it's either going to be totally tits or a total turd!  Front end will also be C6 but with custom upper control arms. C6 UCA's, although real cool looking, are too long to use without sacrificing performance.
As far as the tires, I guess it would be best to go up and look at them in person.

One of my concerns is this, and please tell me if I'm just being a little bitch but, the camaro is much wider than the Nova so that width of tire is fine for it. I'm just not sure if the proportion will be right visually for the Nova and the theme I'm going for. Does it look mean? OH HELL YEAH! but I want to make sure there is the right balance. I was thinking going 295 rear and 255 front. That, to me, is a more balanced ratio but I guess I should really see it in person to decide.
The '34 is pretty sick eh?!! This is one of the reasons I went with these guys. They seem to have the ability to walk the fine line between old school and new school and know each pretty well. What's surprising is how young they all are but, damn, they know their stuff and the welders are true artists!

I guess the deciding factor for me will be the difference in handling/performance. If the 335's are going to be night and day in terms of performance then there's no contest. It's 335's! Now, if the 295's will give me 95% of the performance that the 335's will give then I will sacrifice a little performance for looks. Anyone out there able to tell me what the performance differences will be with the 2 tires? Keep in mind that the car will be mainly used as a canyon carver/mild road race open track car. What I want to know is how the 335's will work with the 255's in front versus 295 in back working with 255's in front.
66IISS
22nd-December-2006, 05:50 PM
I'd say it really depends on the kind of power that you're trying to put down.
The wider tire will really help with avoiding oversteer in turns, but might promote a bit of understeer. Me and my dad autocross a basically stock '90 vette that isn't puttin down too much power, i think stock hp numbers are 245 with boat loads of torque. this car doesn't put down a heck of a lot more but it's got some mild head work and mild exhaust work.
Anyways, back to your tire problem. i wouldn't go any less than 295's, 335's might be a bit of overkill. Between the 335's and some 305's it wont be a night and day difference, but i think you will notice it. Wider is always better, but you can probably afford to go a little smaller than 335's unless you're planing on putting down insane amounts of power.
Keep us updated! the car sounds like fun!

I share your thoughts on the proportion aspect of the car. Don't know much(acutally nothing) on autocross but I imagine that tire choice and compound along with suspension tuning will make the car handle as much as needed to get the job done. Once you have the car done you may not push to or above the car's limit in handling and speed but I've been known to be wrong before.

Yeah.....I kind of feel the same way Shane and 66. Although the fabricator really wants to go 335(I'm sure part of the reason is that when we show it most people will ooh and aah about how wide the rear tires are!) but as much as I want the car to look good I want it to perform and I get the feeling that 295 should be plenty for me. I'll have to research more on this and see how much difference there is in performance..................
But DAMN those fatties look nice back there!(Decisions, Decisions!!):)

Awright.....I relented! The fabricator made a great point in telling me that the Z06 corvette makes around 500 horse and GM put 325's on the back of it so obviously they feel you need the rubber to handle that kind of horsepower. I plan on having around 550 hp. I guess I have to defer to the experts on this one! Actually, I really like the way it looks and could have gone either way. Also, I always have the option of changing tire widths later if I want.

Anyone know, other than Katech and Nasty Performance, who makes coil pack relocators for LSx engines?
Now that most of the major components are coming together on the car, I have been thinking about seats. Anyone know of some good ones? I like the ones that Hotrodgary has in his ride. VERY classy! I will probably be doing something similar to Gary's as it will be front and back buckets with a center console. One big concern is how I will have at least a 3 point seat belt in the car without having to hang it off the roofline!:(

Might not be what yer looking for as far as seats but it's an option.
Ya can have foam added for side bolsters, cover em how ya want.....

Great Link! I'm wondering if the 21" bucket seat back will be too high as I would like to try and keep it below the window line for a cleaner appearance like Hotrodgarys! From what I know of seatbelt placement you usually have to have it fairly high for it to be effective. I was thinking of doing it like I saw in my buddies helicopter but he has it where the two straps going over his shoulders meet in the back and form a Y and this goes to a retractor on the floor. I found out this is not a good way to do this as many who have done it this way have ended up with compressed spines!
I don't like the way the sebring seats look although I have only seen pictures so if there is someone in the area that has them in there II I would love to have a look see! Also, I heard they aren't that well bolstered!

Ground clearance will be 4 1/2" to 5" at the cowl. Car will be sprung. CA Double adjustable Varishocks. I had to have CA make some custom ones for the rear with extra travel so that if I need to change the rear tire when I jack up the back it will go down enough to clear the quarter. Ride height should look something like this:

For the Stevesnovasite brethren I will tell all!!!:D
Interior - Kind of like Hotrodgary's but not quite as plush. Maybe a little more race car inspired. Edgy. Tech. Brushed aluminum. Bling but subtle. Still deciding!
Paint - Still deciding!
Custom stuff - Well....at the point the car is right now it will ALL be pretty much custom!

John,
Your car is really starting to come to life. wow. I've built enough cars to know what looks good, and yours is certainly special. You've done a great job, and I hope that your vision comes to fruition soon.
I know you haven't chosen a color yet, but you do have a certain hue in mind? Silver? Blue? Red?
With all of the money you're investing, that car deserves an amazing paint job - something to really make it pop. Depending on what your vision is, I've found that Porshe, Aston Martin, and (surprisingly) Dodge has an excellent variety of paint pallets to choose from.
Again, great job. I can't wait to see it all together.

You read my mind as far as sources for color inspiration! Certainly Black would look mean and definitely go with the theme of the car(Purposeful but with some style!) but I am trying to get away from this color as everyone has done it and so I am looking to some of the new colors that automakers are coming up with although Black will always look good. I would have to say that Black, Red, and/or Silver would be my top choices right now!

LOL....thanks!!! I kind of have been breaking down the project into pieces so that I don't get discouraged that they aren't going fast enough! Right now the goal is to finish the chassis, get the backspace so I can order the wheels and, when the wheels arrive, get tires on them, mount them to the car and get the car on the ground so I can see how the stance is. I'm still debating on wheels. This is the front runner right now!

If you're going this blingy....get some wheels by HRE or something. The polished billet is a little too street rod oriented in my opinion. You need something more race car oriented. ;)
"HRE 3-piece wheels look, fit and perform better than any other for good reason. HRE's design, engineering and manufacturing experts work in concert to create wheels that are as technically precise as they are beautiful. Each set custom-tailored for the world's finest vehicles. It's what sets HRE wheels apart. Unequaled commitment. Unequaled results.
Features include:
Custom 3-piece fitments and finishes in:
[18] & [19] inch sizes - Widths from 7.5”–13”"

That's why I'm thinking of brushing the centers. It'll give it more or less the same look as the pic you posted. Another thing I like is the classic 5 spoke design it has. It actually kind of reminds me of the Fikse 5S's which, as you know, are a pretty classic wheel. Here is a Nova with the Fikse's:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/Sinjemsideview.jpg
I do want to have some blingy touches to the car but, as I'm sure you've figured out by now, I'm all about balancing one element against the other. I like the wheel you posted but I actually like the ones you have on your car better than the HRE's. HRE's are a litttle too busy for me but then again when you see them on here:

Yup...that's Waynes old shop! I was going to have him do the chassis for me and we were just about to get started when he had to shut down. Jesses a cool guy too! Doesn't talk much though! Wayne had given me his number since Jesse had opened his own shop and I spoke to him a few times and we even got as far as almost sealing the deal but he seemed way to busy at the time and, after thinking about it, I decided I didn't want to have to fly up to Washington every time I needed to see the car! I got alot of people asking me for his number on Pro-touring.com and Lateral-g.net. Hope I could send some business his way! I was kind of bummed though when one of the people I gave the number too that wanted a Chevy II C4 clip got turned down by him!
The car in the picture belongs to a gentleman by the name of Doug Sinjem. He and I have spoken on several occasions and I grilled him pretty hard as to what he would have done differently on his car. I applied alot of those things to the project I have going on right now!

That's right. "Sinjem" . I used to go up there when I had time. I watched that whole thing come together. I can't remember all the names of the different owners (gettin old sucks BTW). I think it will be better for you in the long run having your car close to you. That's great you got to talk with Doug. It's always best to learn from someone elses mistakes when $$$$'s are involved. Does Doug have any idea when his car will be on the road? I lost track of it after Wayne closed up shop.

Yeah...you should of heard him! I guess he had asked Wayne to stretch the chassis 3 inches and when he got it back down here he decided that he didn't like it so he had to section the chassis and cut it down 3 inches!$$$$ Then he was complaining that Wayne had attached the UCA pickup points too far in and that he had to cut them out and reweld them in the "correct" placement!$$$$ Blah, Blah, blah.......$$$$$$$$ I will say, though, that in the end, he did say that, for the most part, Wayne did a great job!
Unfortunately the last time I talked to him he was in the middle of a divorce so who knows what quagmire he is in right now! Hope all goes well for him! Nice guy!
Jesse is definitely a GREAT welder! Man, those camaro clips he was pumping out were BEAUTIFUL!!!! The welds looked like rolls of nickles!!!!:)
JRChevy
18th-January-2007, 04:48 AM
Yeah .. I can only dream to weld as well as Jesse or Wayne. But what really sucks is now I have to find another way to get into SEMA since Wayne closed up shop? But i think I got that covered already.
It always amazes me what people ask for when building cars when they really don't know what they want. It's like ordering at the drive through then changing your mind when you get to the PAY-UP window.
I think you've got your order in right for your car. You should be pleased at the PAY-UP window!!:D

Problem is there are a lot of zeros on the register!!!! I've built a lot of cars and have come to find out that every one of those cars I built I had a few regrets and "shoulda done this or thats"! I've learned that if your going to do it, make a plan and stick to it. And most important, in that plan do it to your satisfaction or your just spinning your wheels because in the end you won't be satisfied! It'll cost you 10 times as much to go back in and put what you didn't in the initial build because you didn't want to spend the money on it then!

The wheels you are talking about are the ten spoke 'vette wheels! I'm looking for wheels with more lip on them. I haven't seen any that chevy offers that have that kind of reverse lip look.

Hey John just a thought but, When you finally have your wheels picked out, "if" there are centercaps, Have a decal made with the "ZO66" logo on them. Or have it inscribed. With all the sponsors you have so far, someone ought to do that for ya. Depending on how its done it could be subtle or standout.

Those are pretty nice looking, plenty of lateral support.
What kind are they?

They're Procar Rallys! Yeah....I like that they have plenty of sidebolstering for "spirited" driving! I'm wondering, though, how I'm going to get seatbelts on this thing without hanging the retractors from the roofline!

I agree. They've had it for what 6 weeks now?
They most definitaly aren't wasting any time getting things done, on top of that it looks like they do top notch work.
When do you expect to take possesion of it from them?

Well, from Joes post I would've liked it yesterday but......patience is a virtue right??!! I would say that, at the rate that Ironworks is going, the chassis and sheetmetal work should be done in the next 8 weeks, then, it's off to the powdercoater and then off to paint prison! This'll give me time to start detailing the engine components and get the trans and diff beefed up a little(or a lot!):)

No...I don't think so at this point. I think I will do something more along the lines of Hotrodgary but not quite as plush. More edgy! I'm still debating on what seats I am going to go with. I have been looking at corbeau, recaro, or procar for new and, with the help of the site brothers, maybe Audi, Honda, etc. seats.

With the 'dub I used to sit on a milk crate to drive and the passengers would have to sit in the back or lay on the floor where the passenger seat USED to be. We had some wild and wooly rides in that thing!:)

Nothing terribly exciting! I was bored and decided to post these pics up. We hung the doors for fitment, got the power steering pulley on the motor and are fine tuning some of the rear end stuff but, for the most part, we are just waiting on parts and materials. Rodgers waiting for some dyes for his bender so he can start on the cage.

Thanks! I'm working on a rendering so that y'all can see what it will look like in the end! Well.....at least what I THINK it will look like in the end! I change my mind every 5 minutes! It's so hard to really decide since their are so many choices to make! Probably most of the pics coming up will be of the rear end which we'll be trying to button up by finishing the tubular work and UCA's. After that we we'll probably replace the quarters and tail panel and start trying to fit the wheel tubs. Ooooohhhh!! I'm getting a headache again thinking of all the work that's ahead and the decisions I need to make!!!:beat: :) :D

I know what you mean about the early stages! It's almost more fun seeing the car being built than the finished product!(Almost!) I really enjoy seeing how people build their cars and all the craftsmanship that goes into it. It really makes me appreciate their cars that much more. That's why I decided to post up the build here so that all of you could get to see how this one goes! Hope you enjoy it!
