Today was the day to light a fire in the hole of my newly built 283 with the following... .060 over KB pistons, Crane cam, Edlebrock performer heads, Road Demon Jr, MSD HEI and more. Replaced all wiring with a nice Ron Francis EXPRESS wiring harness. Anyway today was the day to light it off. Dumped a bit of gas in the carb turned the key and it came to life...for a minute or two. Primed it a few times and it lit everytime but then quit. No fuel in carb glass, no fuel in filter. I have loosened a line at the carb and started it again to get any air out. I am suspecting the pump which is a new one but who knows. Anymore ideas out there?

Did you remember to install the fuel pump pushrod and the pump lever is under it? Is your fuel line back to the tank original? It could be rusted. Ofter you check the pump installation, take a length of 3/8" hose and put one end of the fuel pump inlet and the other in a gas can. See if the pump sucks gas. If it does then you have a problem somewhere in the line going to the tank inlet. Fuel sock could be clogged.
Hey, don't those Performer heads have 64cc chambers? You know that a 283 has 60cc chambers so 64cc heads are going to lower your SCR (from 8.5 to 8.11) and a performance cam is going to make your DCR even lower (depending on specs)?

If the pump rod is in like Paul asked.
Make sure you did not put too long of a bolt in the threaded hole in the front of the block. This will lock the pump rod and prevent it from sliding. I believe the 283 blocks are tapped through. Just make sure.....

You don't have to break the carb fitting to get air out, there's a needle and seat right next to it that will do the job.
Fuel in the tank? Clogged suction line? Air leak in the suction line? Fuel pump lines installed correctly ( suction line to tank, discharge line to carb )?

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input to my problem but all it was that I had to the two hoses on the pump backwards...
